Abstract (EN)

Zygmunt Bauman's theory of liquid modernity posits that the modern world is characterized by constant change and uncertainty, continuously reshaping individuals' identities, values, and interests. The study titled "The Place of 'Fluidity' in Academic Research Orientations as a Possibility of Zygmunt Bauman's Sociology: The Example of Graduate Students at Istanbul Gelişim University Graduate Education Institute" examines the effects of Bauman's theory on graduate students' educational processes. The findings of this qualitative study, conducted using purposive sampling, indicate that students balance personal interests, academic guidance, and career goals when selecting their thesis topics. This balance enables them to adapt to constantly changing social and academic conditions, thereby renewing their identities. The data suggest that participants emphasize the need for continuous self-renewal and adaptation, while not being overly concerned about the risk of their professions becoming obsolete. This perspective may not fully align with Bauman's themes of uncertainty and insecurity, and may generate stress and pressure for some individuals. However, participants' efforts to adapt to technological and social transformations significantly contribute to their professional development and societal contributions. In line with Bauman's theory, continuous learning and adaptation skills support both individual success and social cohesion. By adapting to change, students redefine themselves in terms of academic success and societal contributions. This study underscores the importance of Bauman's sociological perspective in understanding educational processes and identity formation in the modern world.
