Consumer behavior in the age of social media: The sample of Sakarya University

During this time period called social media age, online platforms that shape the lives of individuals and allow users to interact are becoming very popular. While social platforms have a great impact on individuals as news or information sources, they also transform marketing strategies in the context of entertainment, social sharing and content creation. In this context, this study aims to measure the behavioral changes in the purchasing processes of consumers in many ways by addressing the social media platforms that become an indispensable part of the daily lives of individuals. The opportunity to be included in the communication and sharing network by communication facilities makes social media sites the tool of a new generation of marketing. In this way, the social networks, which take the majority of their time under the influence of individuals, attract the interest of companies. Companies actively use social media platforms to attract attention to their products, brands or customers. The research plans to explore the perceptions of university students based on the idea that social media platforms are an effective tool for young consumers. The present study also aims to reveal the impact levels of social media platforms, which are the strong sources of digital transformation, on individuals. In this context, this thesis tests the hypotheses with a quantitative strategy applied to students of the Faculty of Communication who focuses on new media studies. In the scope of the study, a questionnaire was developed with 38 items consisting of 11 demographics and 27 social networks and a sample group of 300 students was applied. The data obtained from the survey with the contribution of SPSS program were analyzed by using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), LSD Multiple Comparison Test and Independent Sample t Test and Pearson Moment Correlation Coefficient. The results of the research show that it is more possible to choose brands, products or services that are aware of the social media. In addition, the findings show that the individuals considered within the scope of the sample tend to use social media platforms as much as possible in their purchasing processes. For this reason, research shows that social media platforms have become a daily life practice and they contribute significantly to the attitudes of individuals to their behavior.

Journalism ethics, Breitbart, and post-truth journalism

Post-truth as a term has been used to define many issues we experience in our social and political experiences related to misinformation, and these issues are prevalent in many aspects of our lives, including journalism. This term is widely used and issues about misinformation, internet and journalism has been discussed and researched from many different perspectives. Yet when it comes to one of the main issues about journalism and post-truth, the news-like publications spreading misinformation, we don't have a framework to define and detect these publications, which can be used globally. This research proposes to call these publications' work post-truth journalism and proposes a framework to detect these publications. Since this type of work has been made possible by the certain issues inherent to journalism practice, the work provides necessary background to each criterion selected for the framework and the definition. The findings and the framework has also been discussed with the experts in the field through written interviews. Finally, US-based online publication Breitbart is analyzed with the framework to provide an example of the use of the framework. The framework proves itself useful to detect these types of publications and it's also clear that it's not limited with a certain country, language, or context. The framework in its current state carries further development potential with practical use. The fast evolution of the digital technologies, and its impact on digital journalism, may also require further updates to the framework.

Letterboxd kullanıcılarını anlamak: Platformun film tüketimi alışkanlıkları ve dijital çağda sinefili üzerindeki etkisi

Letterboxd is an online platform that is becoming more and more popular among film enthusiasts. It serves as a space where users engage in film-related activities such as creating their individualized film diaries, giving ratings, writing reviews, and creating their personal watching lists. This study explores the complex field of user psychology in the context of Letterboxd, analyzing the platform's notable impact on users' film-watching habits, the influence of other users' opinions on what people think, and the platform's contribution to the transformation of cinephilia in the digital age. Using quantitative and qualitative methodology, the research employs survey data enhanced with open-ended questions to capture the complex nature of user participation. The goal of the study is to determine how Letterboxd affects users' habits of film consumption by investigating how the platform creates a sense of community among its users, shapes their preferences and viewing decisions, and influences their own opinions regarding films. Furthermore, it aims to unravel the role of Letterboxd in the evolution of a new understanding of cinephilia in the digital age. Ultimately, the research illuminates the changing landscape of cinema appreciation by deconstructing the dynamics of spectatorship habits, the impact of other people's thoughts on forming people's opinions, and the ever-evolving nature of cinephilia.

Türkiye'de dezenformasyonla mücadele politikalarının çevrimiçi haber paylaşma davranışına etkisi

For the past decades, governments and social media companies have attempted to combat the spread of misinformation online by developing new regulations around online technologies. While these attempts have successfully curbed the spread of misinformation in many instances, there have also been cases where such regulations have violated the freedom of expression due to the uncertainty surrounding the definition of misinformation (Cipers et al., 2023). This thesis aims to explore how these strategies to combat misinformation affect the way ordinary citizens engage with news online in an authoritarian-leaning context. In doing so, it investigates the impact of recent counter-misinformation regulation in Turkiye, publicly known as the disinformation or censorship law, on news-sharing behavior. Employing a 2x2 between-subjects online survey experiment among 228 Turkish college student, the study seeks to understand whether exposure to information about the law and the mode of online identity (anonymous vs. real) affects individuals' news-sharing tendencies. Although the salience of the law and the different modes of online identity does not significantly affect news-sharing attitudes as a model, the salience of the law alone has a significant negative relationship with sharing likelihood when all control variables were included in the analysis. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of striking a balance between countering misinformation and protecting freedom of expression online.

Öz uyarlama nedir?

This thesis defines self-adaptation and establishes its markers. Self-adaptation, although a known practice across multiple fields, remains understudied and lacks a definition which clearly highlights its structure and the markers necessary for a work to be considered self-adaptation. This study, based on the definition it establishes, breaks down the practice into it disciplines, star, adaptation, film, performance and music video studies and connects them to a larger theoretical frame. Then, it answers pressing questions that prevail in self-adaptation such as the matter of authority, artistic collaboration, how different media forms fit in the practice and how artists actually perform self-adaptation. The thesis than highlights self-adaptations practice from different time periods by performing an extensive case study on David Byrne which not only shows Byrne's decades long career packed with examples of the practice but how it prolongs careers and artistic visions. It further supporting it with smaller studies that examine Nick Cave, Jim Jarmusch, Neil Young and David Bowie. Finally, the thesis concludes with showing how self-adaptation is currently being practiced by contemporary stars as a means of expanding their artistic horizons and for artistic resilience. Ultimately, the thesis aims to define the practice in a way that makes the definition and its markers applicable for further study. Dijital köprüler: bilgi ve iletişim teknolojilerinin Türkiye'deki Suriyeli göçmen kadınların toplumsal uyum sağlamalarını kolaylaştırmadaki rolü

This research critically examines the nexus between information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the social cohesion of Syrian migrant women in Türkiye through the lens of Bourdieu's field theory and the concept of capital. Through 24 in-depth, semi-structured interviews, this study explores how these women utilize ICTs to build communities, navigate social networks, and shape their identities while overcoming migration challenges. The findings indicate that ICTs are crucial in connecting cultures, enhancing social networks, and creating a sense of belonging, which are essential for social cohesion. However, the research also reveals that while ICTs enable personal connections and community engagement, they can intensify existing inequalities, particularly in access and effective usage. Notably, the study underscores the impact of digital literacy on the women's cohesion process and points out that language barriers and gender-specific challenges critically affect the efficacy of ICTs in supporting this process. By contributing to the broader scholarly discourse on migration, social cohesion, and the impact of digital technologies on disadvantaged populations, this research offers valuable insights for policymakers, NGOs, and community-based organizations involved in supporting the cohesion of Syrian migrant women.

Hontoloji ve namevcudiyet estetiği: Liminal internet estetiği üzerine bir inceleme

This thesis examines the online phenomenon known as internet aesthetics, which became popular during the pandemic, focusing on its three subcategories: dreamcore, weirdcore, and nostalgiacore. These subcategories fall under the broader term of 'liminal internet aesthetics,' which are characterized by familiar yet empty spaces, such as abandoned malls, schools, and homes, often imbued with a nostalgic yet unsettling feeling. Within the vast visual realm of internet aesthetics, liminal internet aesthetics employ a visual language centered on the motif of 'human absence.' The aim of this thesis is to analyze this visual language created by the motifs of 'absence' and 'presence' as a reflection of societal anxieties heightened by the global pandemic and the media-saturated world. For this analysis, the research draws on the concept of hauntology, introduced by Jacques Derrida and later expanded upon by cultural theorist Mark Fisher, as well as Fisher's iv concepts of the weird and the eerie, two modes of hauntology that are categorized in this thesis under the concept of 'absence aesthetics.' Further, the thesis adopts a qualitative methodology combining close visual analysis with ethnographic participant observation conducted within online aesthetic communities. Ultimately, this research seeks to contribute to the existing literature on internet aesthetics and digital culture, particularly in relation to the post-pandemic cultural landscape.

Drastic changes in life, such as migration, impact identity and shape how one understands their environment. In this process, the host country's attitude plays a huge role in the adaptation of migrants to their new ecosystem and surroundings. Cultural similarities, attitudes of NGOs, and inclusive policies have an impact on creating safe spaces, along with positive attitudes of members of the host country. While Türkiye ranks second in the world for hosting refugees and other people in need of international protection (UNHCR, 2024), the prejudice against the immigrant community is a notable problem. Combined with persistent hostility toward the LGBTQ+ community, queer immigrants in Türkiye face several challenges in their everyday lives. As this study grounds in a constructive understanding of identity, it aims to understand how queer immigrant individuals negotiate these marginalized identities using Kiesling's (2022) stance theory. For this purpose, in-depth semi-structured interviews and social media scrollback interviews were conducted with eight queer migrant participants recruited through snowball sampling. Findings reveal the migration experience leads to a deep self-reflection among queer migrants. In their social lives, their queer identity plays a key role rather than their migrant identity. As the intersection of these identities remains complex, language (both Turkish and Lubunca) plays a key role in belonging and identity expression. Participants also emphasized the need for queer-led NGO support that encourages legal awareness, community building, and solidarity.

Video oyunlarında çevresel anlatı yoluyla mekansal kapitalizmin incelenmesi: The Last of Us Part I & BioShock

This thesis presents a critical media study of AAA video game design, thereby positioning narrative space as a key site for ideological struggle and cultural reflection. By investigating how environmental storytelling is used by the two video games, The Last of Us and BioShock, this research questions and challenges systems of power and capitalist ideologies. Drawing primarily on Harvey's (2005) theory of spatial capitalism and Jenkins' (2004) framework of narrative architecture, the thesis examines how space, infrastructure, and narrative design function as ideological texts in video game environments. The socio-economic systems and spatial logic ingrained in the post-apocalyptic and dystopian settings of the games are interpreted to provide a framework for analyzing how environmental design and player interaction can convey narrative meaning. Through a comparative case study, findings reveal both games transform physical space into a narrative device that reflects and contest capitalist systems by confront players with the everyday realities of privatized space, and systemic inequality, inviting critical reflection not just through narrative, but through the very architecture of play.

Direnişin yankıları: Türkiye'de müzik, hafıza ve protesto

Music has been an inseparable part of our lives, accompanying our daily routines, activities, and emotional states from the early periods of history to the present day. The impact of music on individual emotions has also led it to become an integral component of the collective activities of societies and states. With its ability to appeal to communities, translate emotions, and mobilize masses, music has also become an important tool of political communication. This study examines the role of music in protest culture and its function as a means of constructing collective memory through the recollected experiences of participants in two significant social movements in Turkey: the student movements of the 1970s and the 2013 Gezi Park protests. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 individuals who experienced their youth in the 1970s and participated in the Gezi Park protests of 2013. The participants were asked about their musical preferences and political views, as well as the connections between the songs used in the protests they attended and their personal experiences. The study observed the role of music as a mnemonic device for the participants. It was found that the differing political contexts and protest cultures of these two periods influenced the types of music used in the movements. However, despite these historical differences, the songs used in both periods were found to have similar emotional effects on individuals, transforming personal memories into a collective narrative and serving as reminders that help preserve and transmit the memory of past social movements to new generations. By analyzing the relationship between protest culture, music, and collective memory in the Turkish context, this study argues that music is not only an expressive form but also an essential component that sustains and reconstructs resistance within social movements.

Bir varmış bir yokmuş: Irk, temsil ve Disney'in modern masalları

This thesis explores how Disney's recent live-action remakes (The Little Mermaid [2023], Aladdin [2019], and Mulan [2020]) engage with themes of race, ethnicity, and cultural identity, particularly in comparison to their animated predecessors from the Disney Renaissance era. As global conversations around diversity and inclusion evolve, Disney has become a focal point for praise and criticism. It stands at the intersection of nostalgia and influence. It is a cherished part of many childhoods and a powerful corporation that helps shape dominant narratives about identity, difference, and belonging. Rather than assuming these adaptations represent either superficial gestures or profound transformations, this study critically examines the representational shifts they introduce. Using qualitative textual analysis, it considers casting decisions, character development, visual aesthetics, and cultural settings to assess how mainstream storytelling constructs inclusion. These films offer particularly compelling case studies due to their international visibility, commercial success, and the public debates they sparked concerning race, authenticity, and performative inclusivity. The findings indicate that while these remakes present a more diverse visual landscape and incorporate language of empowerment, they often leave underlying ideological structures intact. This thesis contributes to broader discussions about how media institutions negotiate race and culture, revealing how inclusion can be offered in form but not always in substance. Keywords: Disney, race, ethnicity, representation, performative wokeness.

Türk sinemasinda devlet destekleri

This thesis examines the economic and industrial effects of Turkey's one and only national public film funding scheme, Law 5224, enacted in 2004 and put into practice in 2005 onwards. Adopting an economic film history approach, it analyses a 15-year period (2005–2019) to assess how the funding body's objectives, expectations, and operational framework have influenced film production and the career trajectories of funded directors. Drawing on a compiled dataset created from publicly available sources, the study provides both macro-level statistical analysis and micro-level career-based evaluation of the funding scheme and its impact on directors' career trajectories. The findings indicate that while Law 5224 has contributed to increased production levels in parallel with the industrial growth the Turkish film industry undergoes, the main objective of improving the film industry, and financial expectations from applicants show a misalignment between the public funding body and the private, oligopolist distribution industry. Thus, the structural limitations in Law 5224 hinder its capacity to foster a sustainable, balanced film industry. The research contributes to the underdeveloped literature on the Turkish film industry economics, offering a quantitative study of public funding's industrial role and its interaction with private market dynamics.

E-ticaret sitelerinde tanıdık olmayan ürün seçimlerini yönlendiren dijital ipuçları

As e-commerce platforms increasingly shape consumer preferences and decisionmaking processes, this thesis investigates how digital cues influence online shopping behavior and how users interpret these cues. This thesis focuses on two Turkish ecommerce platforms, Trendyol and Hepsiburada, which were examined through scenario-based focus group discussions. This thesis focuses on design features of ecommerce interfaces, such as product information, reviews, and layout, and how users connect these elements to trust, risk perception, and decision-making processes. The Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) provides an analytical framework and allows an exploration of how argument quality, personal relevance, responsibility, and prior knowledge shape the processing of persuasive messages through central or peripheral routes. The findings show that participants evaluated products and platforms around trust, uncertainty avoidance, brand value themes. In this way, the thesis emonstrates the impact of digital cues on consumer behavior within the Turkish e-commerce context. It contributes to discussions on how online shopping environments and product presentations can be more transparent, reliable, and user centered.

Lübnan, Mısır ve Ürdün sinemasında Filistin-İsrail çatışması (2010-2018).

This study scrutinizes the documentary portrayal of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict by its neighboring countries Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon. Which participated in International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, International Dubai Film Festival, and Doha Tribeca Film Festival from 2010-2018. The research aligns with these three countries as there has been a shared history since 1948, with the establishment of the State of Israel. Along with the Israeli government's denial of the right to return to their homeland, which had conveyed the Palestinians into different parts of the world as refugees. Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon had been the foremost host for the Palestinian refugees since then. Therefore, it is substantial to take a glimpse into the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from their point of view through documentaries. This analysis aspires to examine the political structure of the documentaries. Then, furthermore draw a pattern of how its neighboring countries portray the Palestinian experiences and prominent themes of Palestinian documentaries some of which are exile, trauma, struggle, and loss. With the framework that will analyze how the six documentaries that I have picked have a concern to create a political consciousness and encourage a local and global support for the Palestinian cause.

Tedavül, Taşı Beni, Herkes Esir Düşmüş: 2008 sonrası resesyonel filmlere dair bir analiz

As the impact of The Great Recession of 2008 has been felt severely by millions of people, "why" and "how" of the crisis became the topic of debate in almost every field. Number of films revolving around the crisis, whether explicitly focusing on The Great Recession or taking the scene designated by the crisis as a background for similar stories about white collar workers, have been made. The argument of this thesis is that, these narratives focusing on the crisis is a new cycle of films revealing a capitalist realist attitude, and can be named as "recessionary films." Under three main headings -ideology, structural columns, and crime/justice dichotomy- I analyze the narratives to explore their common thematic elements.

Kusurlu aile fotoğrafları: Algoritmanın tanımladığı mükemmel fotoğrafın dışarıda bıraktığı hatalar

The subject matter of this study is defining and classifying "errors" left out from the algorithmic definition of "perfect photograph" in visual technologies and making understandable their relation with the developments in tools. New features that promote "perfect photographs" are added to cameras and applications and then they start to shape the perceptions. At this point, how the "perfect photograph" is defined is very important because it is very subjective topic varying from person to person and over time. The categorization is made according to algorithms used in digital cameras, cellphone cameras and applications. They are technical errors, timing errors and non-smile errors. The applications, the modes of cameras are exemplified and the predetermined standards of them are explained in this study. The introduction of advances in the field of image technology starts to change the standards in family photography. As a part of vernacular photographs, the family album takes its share from the effects of algorithms in cameras and applications. With the strong relation to memory, the elimination of errors in family albums has important meaning and results. As a practical side of the thesis, "Failed" is an interactive installation composed of family photographs. For the celebration of imperfections in family albums, an interactive and participative approach is preferred. All these "imperfections" in family albums that we could keep give me an inspiration to pursue the errors definition by algorithms.

Dijital platformlar Türkiye'de sinema sektörünü nasıl etkiliyor?

Oligopolization of Turkish film industry in the point of distribution and screening concentrated on 2015 and film theaters have been condemned to mediocre, income-oriented comedies only for 'entertainment' culture. The companies already constituting a dominant force in terms of screening have also become active in the field of film production. In addition to these, after 2015, digital platforms, offering very large online content libraries in high quality, without advertising, and with affordable subscription fees compared to the prices of movie tickets, have begun to provide service in Turkey. Aim of this study is analyzing what traditional film industry and digital film platforms becoming widespread offer to viewers in accordance with the current dynamics of the cinema in Turkey. The possible impacts of technological developments on cinema have been discussed throughout the history of cinema. The study discusses how cinema audience influenced by the current digitalization brings the possibilities of cinema out of the movie theaters and makes them available at any moment. Additionally, the aim is to reach a conclusion about the current situation and future of especially art-house or non-mainstream productions.

Otizm spektrum bozukluğu: Dört bağımsız filme dair okuma

Both Hollywood and independent productions have been interested in depicting Autism Spectrum Disorders in the last thirty years. Within this period, diagnostic criteria of this developmental disorder have made dramatic progress by involving in different conditions and understandings. In parallel with this progress, it can be assumed that contemporary film and tv productions have offered diverse representations of ASD. Yet, to make such an assumption, several signs of progress in different factors (diagnosis of ASD, representations of ASD, production models of the films) should be investigated. The current thesis aims to examine the tendency of using stereotypical representations of ASD in contemporary independent productions. In this respect, the examination will be made through the close-readings of the following four films, Temple Grandin (2010), Life, Animated (2016), Snow Cake (2006) and Mozart and the Whale (2005).

Digital media revolution has provided new possibilities for different industries globally, in lives of individuals including business related areas, entertainment and personal relations. Technological advancements have sped up these changes, especially with the Internet and computational devices. Convergence of the Internet and existing media elements like telephones and computers have altered media, society and the culture of 21st Century. Traditional media forms like television has started to be affected by these changes as well. Streaming platforms have emerged over the last decades that are providing unlimited access to video or music material for monthly subscription fees. Netflix is one of these platforms which uses algorithmic recommendation systems that analyze user behavior for generating relevant material for each user. Recommendation systems are fundamental elements inside Video-on-Demand services that provide a unique experience for each user. With studies around the world, effects of Video-on-Demand services is being researched over the years, such as its effect on binge-watching behavior among the users. This thesis aims to focus specifically on the effects of algorithmic recommendation systems on the watching behavior of the audience of Video-on-Demand platforms by focusing on Netflix. As to analyze these possible effects, a theoretical background is presented that focuses the steps of these changes happening in the digital media era; followed by a research study conducted by Turkish Netflix subscribers through detailed interviews. Two main behaviors are observed over the study, which are presented in detail within the findings.

İlk bakışta: Transmedya deneyimi ile alternatif bir gerçeklik oyunu yaratmak

When images come together, the viewer starts to read a story according to their own perceptions. The actual motivation of the storyteller is to let the viewer create a story based on their own ongoing biases, then to instill an unexpected perspective to make them retrospectively evaluate the entire storyline they had created. Using the transmedia storytelling method makes the viewer feel immersed in the story so that they can reinforce the image of the story in their mind. That is why I am trying to find out: "How can we effectively make the audience an active part of the project and create a common ground, by using Transmedia Storytelling?" This thesis will support the alternate reality game that I have formed via transmedia storytelling named "At First Sight". The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of the project "At First Sight", which is an alternate reality game developed through transmedia storytelling in the frame of this thesis. This thesis introduces the works of the artist group called "Blast Theory" and analyzes the relationship between these works and the "At First Sight" project. In this sense, "Play the Life, Live the Game" and "Confession" projects, which were realized by using the alternate reality game and interactive game installation, were also included in the scope of the thesis in addition to "At First Sight". In this context, the process and development of the projects examined are explained within the framework of supported theories and audience feedback.

Elektronik atıkların sanat ile geri dönüştürülmesi

This thesis aims to take a closer look at artistic projects that use discarded electronic parts as preferred medium. Electronic waste cumulates as the result of a highly technological era. The artworks that take part in this thesis emphasize that obsolete electronics should not be considered waste. From an array of artworks presented, works from artists such as Grégory Chatonsky, Walter Giers and Gabriel Dishaw partake in this thesis. In order to scrutinize these artworks, this study adopts a theoretical perspective that is strongly rooted in Deleuze and Guattari's concepts of 'becoming,' 'rhizome' and 'deterritorialization.' These theories are applied to the fluid state of geological properties—such as aluminium, gold, copper and tantalum—that make up electronic devices. The contents that bring electronics to life are mined predominantly from the inner layers of the earth's strata; therefore, their becomings are initiated long before their functionality in electronics. Contributing to and expanding upon the Deleuzian-Guattarian thought, Braidotti's articulations on 'becoming-nomad' and her argument that nomadic ethics is the path for a sustainable future is also utilized. Besides, engaging in a different perspective toward media, Parikka emphasizes the need to look at media hardware and understand the contents that makes electronics function. Through art, identifying obsolete electronics with a potential for further use engages with issues of sustainability. Keywords: Becoming, Braidotti, E-Waste, Parikka, Sustainability

Gözü insanlaştırma ötesi: Makine sanatı ile dağıtılmış bakış yaratmak

This thesis explores the adaptation of distributed cognition theory to the concept of distributed gaze between the artwork and the viewer, through machine art. This mechanical mixed media eye sculpture displays the probability of sharing the gazing agency between the human and the non-human actor. This project is not merely representing the eye but rather post-humanizing it, arguing that this recreation of the human organ will present the viewer with a new paradigm that puts both parties in a proactive position. Beyond the technological materiality's implication, without disconnecting with the hardware component, the human eye meets with its muse, the human.

1-GO 1-E: Karma medya heykelde süresel estetiğin gelişimi

This thesis investigates the development of a technique for the depiction of motion in painting through mixed media sculpture. Utilizing stacked glass layers as the spatial medium, 1-Go 1-E conceptualizes the technique utilized in the creation of barrier grid animations to be used in painting. Examining the concept of movement through the composite of Henri Bergson's conception of qualitative and quantitative multiplicities, this thesis merges both to create a workflow for the creation of stacked glass mixed media sculptures.

Ziyaretçilerin motivasyon ve deneyim analizi: Cermodern Sanat Merkezi vaka çalışması

This study focuses on the motivation and experience of visitors in CerModern Art Center, located in Ankara Turkey. The main concern is to understand which state motivates people to visit the Center, and what they experience there during their visits. It is also aimed to find the effect of special events in increasing the number of visitors to art centers. This thesis is based on two theoretical concepts the push-pull factor theory and the escape-seeking dichotomy. Qualitative and quantitative research conducted through surveys and interviews enabled data to be collected to examine the relationship between motivation and experience of visitors. The first survey focused on the push and pull motivations showing the reasons for visits and it was administered to visitors when they just arrived at the center. The second survey was the experience questionnaire and it was completed by visitors who spent time in the center. Survey findings were analyzed via descriptive statictics and the interviews. This thesis revealed significant results about visitors' motivation and experiences.

Monitör: Saat kulesini tekrar düşlemek biçim, zincir reaksiyonu ve zaman üzerine bir sanatçı araştırması

Monitor is a re-imagination of a clock tower, which re-conceptualizes the passing of time in a way that all moving elements inside the city outdoors become the units of the timekeeping activity. Abandoning the conventional approaches that frame time as a homogeneous entity, I make use of Bergson's description of dura, and rethink the so-called homogeneity rather as a heterogeneous structure composed of distinct durations that are constantly intersecting with each other, and, produce infinite amount of arbitrary arrangements. This thesis offers a concept of an urban media sculpture that mirrors the movement of the people in outdoor settings, by collecting the real-time data from public monitoring systems. In doing so, the theory and the practice became intricate which makes the main focus of this thesis principally to celebrate the process of artistic research.

Bireylerden toplumsal figürlere: Türkiye'de ünlü kimliği inşası

Celebrated individuals are everywhere in the consumerist societies in which technology is developing rapidly, and their impact as social phenomenona on the societies, media, and consuming habits is significant. Although celebrities as individuals and celebrity culture have been the topic of media and cultural studies since the late 90s and there is a rich and growing body of literature in the field, there is almost no previous study tackling the issue in Turkey. This thesis investigates the notion of celebrity in Turkey and how the celebrity system functions, by examining three strong cases: Seda Sayan, Cem Yılmaz, and Acun Ilıcalı, and their individual identity construction processes. By adopting foundational theories with respect to the cultural specificities and differences, and examining the recurring patterns in three different cases, it aims to reveal how Turkish media situates celebrities within the broader framework of culture. Ütopyaya doğru: Cassils, Boychild ve Marval A Rex'in performanslarında queer zaman ve mekan

This thesis examines queer body/performance art concentrating on the concepts of time and space. Prioritizing the approach of queer theory to the perception of time and space, the performances of Cassils, boychild and Marval A Rex are explored. The primary purpose of this thesis is to reveal the queer politics and potentials regarding time and space in the performances of the selected artists. To achieve this goal, this thesis explores how the concepts of time and space are built depending on gender and sexuality and how heteronormativity excludes queers during this building process. Accordingly, seeking to find a way to suspend the formation of this normative spatio-temporality which renders queers invisible, this project approaches performance art as a world-making practice to explore alternative ways of existence. In this respect, this thesis argues that these artists entail their bodies and performative spaces into a never-ending process as a queer strategy to build their own non-normative peculiar existence. Thus, the chosen artists gesture toward a utopian world which remains vital for queers by conceptually dismantling the domination of heteronormative body, identity, gender and sexuality.

Kimlik hesaplaşması: Google'ın kurumsal kimlik iletişimi ve medya'nın tanımlaması karşılaştırmalı bir analizi

This thesis focuses on how Google uses organizational communication strategies to introduce its organizational identity, products and services in comparison to how mainstream media outlets such as the New York Times and the Guardian portray their corporate identities. Grounded in identity theory, organizational identity, and based on literatures in media and technological advancements, the focus of this case study is comparing and contrasting how an organization uses communication strategies to introduce itself to the public, versus how traditional mass media covers the same organization through content analysis. The goal is to reveal the effectiveness of organizational communication strategies and practices. By designating organizational identity differencies, the thesis makes inferences on how Google can strengthen its portrayal of identity and adjust its attitude towards certain notions.

Çağdaş İncil uyarlaması filmlerin eleştirel alımlanması

In this thesis, the reception of biblical adaptations is analyzed. By using reception studies, critical discourse analysis and close reading methods; The Passion of the Christ (2004), Mary Magdalene (2018), Noah (2014), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), A Serious Man (2009) and mother! (2017) are analyzed with how the biblical stories are adapted into cinema and what kind of reception they have received from the reviewers. These reviews gathered from American Christian websites and professional film reviews published on popular media, most of which are American, are analyzed and found whether the fidelity criticism is still existing among the film viewers. In this regard, this thesis argues that the Christian members of the audience members expect to see textual fidelity in the biblical adaptations and the lack of it causes films to receive harsh criticism whereas the professional critics are more invested in analyzing the films for their cinematic qualities.

Popüler fantastik animasyon dizilerinde insan-ötekiler ve doğa-ötekiler'in ekoeleştirel analizi

This thesis examines the representations of human-Others and nature-Others in popular animated fantasy series from an ecocritical perspective, and with an ecofeminist approach. The five animated series this thesis investigates, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018-2020), Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts (2020), Disenchantment (2018-), Wizards (2020), and The Dragon Prince (2018-), while all being fantasy texts, have environmentally conscious stories that revolve around characters who are framed as Others in most societies. These marginalized Others, as expected from the fantasy genre, are not always presented as Others we know from our reality, but as mythical creatures and humanoids. Through a close reading of the character designs, settings, and the narratives of these five animated fantasy series, this study aims to explore and uncover new territories where the voices of both human-Others and nature-Others are heard and made clear.

Ebeveynler çocuklarının medya içeriğine ve ekran süresine nasıl ve hangi temelde karar veriyorlar ve hangi tarzda ebeveyn arabuluculuğunu izlemeyi tercih ediyorlar?

The age at which children meet technology and the digital world now begins much earlier than before, and the amount of media content and time they consume is usually determined by their parents. Especially when today's diversity in terms of digital media content is taken into account, it becomes necessary for parents to make better consideration. Therefore, one of the aims of this research is to find out the criteria for parents when choosing media content for their children and indicate to what extent parents are aware of the impacts of media consumption on their children. Based on the answers obtained after in-depth interviews with 20 parents living in Turkey and media diaries that they filled out in detail, this study reveals parental mediation styles used and children's relationship with various media. As parents of children are selected from different age groups between three and six years, findings provide a classification by age and gender as well. Based on the theory of parental mediation, this qualitative study compares parental mediation strategies preferred based on the children's age, further revealing their causes and consequences. As permissible mediation, active mediation, and restrictive mediation are the most studied mediation styles by researchers and pedagogues, these three are also the foci of this thesis. It should also not be overlooked that regardless of the age of the child, the changing situations for many families are similar with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic period and the necessity to stay at home due to extensive lockdowns.

Türk haber medyasındaki "Kanal İstanbul" temsilleri: Hükümet yanlısı ve muhalif gazetelerin içerik analizi

This thesis examines the representations of the Kanal Istanbul project in online news articles published in Turkish pro-government and opposition newspapers with different political and ideological orientations. Five newspapers with different political and ideological perspectives, Sözcü, Cumhuriyet, Yeni Akit, Karar, and Sabah, are analyzed in terms of news content. In the study, news articles about Kanal Istanbul are analyzed under different categories such as the attitude of the news, the general tone of the news, the political figures in the news, the sources used in the news, and the theme of the news. The time scale of quantitative and qualitative content analysis covers the years between 2011 and 2022. Since there is not enough news text for analysis between 2011-2016, the news texts between 2016-2022 are included in the study. Focusing on the representations of the Kanal Istanbul project in the context of media framing theory, this thesis aims to reveal the ideological reflections in news representation by considering the principles of objectivity and impartiality in journalism practices. Barack Obama ve Donald Trump döneminde Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nin Türk mizah dergilerinde karikatür temsilleri

Political caricatures use humor and satire with visual and textual depictions to cast remarks on political figures or situations through exaggerations, disfigurations, or constructed situations. These depictions illustrate or imply the prevailing opinions or consensus on political events or issues. This thesis focuses on Turkey–U.S. relations and representations of the U.S. from 2008 to 2021 in the caricatures on the cover pages of weekly Turkish humor magazines Gırgır, Leman, Penguen, and Uykusuz. The interactions between the U.S. presidents, Barack Obama and Donald Trump, and the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan evolve and change in these exaggerated visual parodies. American symbols and images are used in conjunction with Turkish ones with the aim of providing familiarity and clarifying the meaning in the depicted situations. Absurdity and subversion of events merged with benign familiarity creates political humor and satire. These caricatures claim to present alternative images to understand the covert nuances behind particular political dealings, which classifies them as anti-establishment discourses. The cover pages are analyzed with Greenberg's (2002) framework and tools to explore the content, method, and messages of caricatures. Affective states of caricaturized subjects and language elements in speech bubbles are included as separate categories. The caricatures and their elements are coded and the results are given in tables and charts to clarify the frequency of appearances. This study utilizes descriptive analysis to characterize various aspects of cover pages and to draw corresponding interpretations by considering the incongruity theory of humor.

Post-dijital sinema çağında pratik efektler

This thesis examines the aesthetic implications of using practical effects in post-digital cinema. Digital effects have become more perceptually realistic than the practical effects of the analog era and thus turned into central tools in fulfilling Hollywood's obsession with photorealism. This study argues that digital effects' success in imitating a photorealist style has pushed the practical effects to leave aside their obsession with realism and search for their own aesthetic, which I call "anti-realist." Firstly, the study approaches this aesthetic difference between practical and digital effects from an ontological standpoint. By adopting Rodowick's (2007) arguments informed by Bazinian realism regarding the digital image's lack of indexicality, it conducts a close reading on Wes Anderson's anti-realist practical effects. Then, through the lens of Marks' (2000) concept of "haptic visuality," it explores how the foregrounded materiality of these effects can engage with an embodied experience of spectatorship. Moreover, by adopting a feminist approach to film studies, it proposes the use of practical effects as a feminist tool in the French context to defy Hollywood's standardized effects in the films of Marjane Satrapi and Chloé Mazlo. Finally, it conducts an auteur study on the French director Michel Gondry's filmography to question the place of his analog techniques in constructing his transnational authorship. Overall, this thesis aims to uncover the meaning and significance of leaving aside the CG techniques that have revolutionized contemporary filmmaking in favor of so-called outdated cinematic techniques.

Sağlıklı yaşam fenomenleri, ürettikleri görsel-işitsel içerikler ve Türkiye'deki etkilerinin algılanması üzerine bir araştırma

Social networking sites are full of references to the ideal body and nutrition at a time when using digital media has become the norm. Being a constant observer of social media and, in particular, so-called "health" trends such as "What I Eat in a Day" videos is a gateway to body image and eating disorders despite their claims of promoting healthy eating. Through content analysis and survey, this research examines some key messages in the "What I Eat in a Day" videos and how individuals exposed to these visuals and appearance-based comparisons respond to the videos regarding their healthy lifestyle habits. Results of the content analysis of thirty videos and a survey conducted with eighty people reveal that thematic and visual patterns influence media consumers through videos that reflect shape, weight, and eating concerns, restraint behaviors, and additional concerns about eating and body appearance. These results imply that these "healthy eating" videos have inherent damaging capabilities for young women who already lean toward disrupted eating behaviors.

Akışkan kimlikler: Orta Doğu'daki feminist sanat pratiğinin bir kartografisi

This thesis explores the fluid and relational forms of body and subjectivity in the feminist contemporary art practice of selected Middle Eastern women artists – Sama Alshaibi, Nezaket Ekici, Mona Hatoum, Amal Kenawy, Shirin Neshat, and Lamia Joreige. As interdisciplinary practitioners whose works traverse between different media such as film, video, performance, and installation, these women's artistic praxes render a mobile, changeable, and interconnected account of identity via a complex and dynamic interplay between the dualisms of self/other, mind/body, nature/culture, East/West, and human/nonhuman. Since these artists engage in non-fixed and non-dualistic forms of female existence, this thesis employs Deleuze and Guattari's ontology of becoming and the Deleuzian-inflected new materialist feminisms of Rosi Braidotti, Elizabeth Grosz, and Stacy Alaimo as its theoretical scope. Interweaving the process-oriented, durational, and relational vocabulary of the notion of becoming with Braidotti's nomadism, Grosz's corporeality, and Alaimo's transcorporeality, this study discusses the ways in which these Middle Eastern women artists envisage female subjectivity as an open-ended, plural, and transitory composition that is always on the move, through its relational bonds and linkages with divergent bodies, entities, and geographies. Influenced by the cartographic potential of the theories in question, this thesis concludes by presenting a cartographic imagination of the selected artistic canon as a supplementary method for understanding the malleability and rhizomatic interconnectivity of feminist contemporary art in the Middle East.

Çocukları özneleştirmek: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland ve Peter and Wendy'de Melankoli

This thesis is concerned with the subjectivation of children in children's literature and film, and the melancholy caused to child characters as they are forced down a path of growing up as conceived by adults. Engaged in a close reading of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Peter and Wendy (1911), as well as their select film adaptations Alice in Wonderland (1951), Peter Pan (1953), Return to Never Land (2002), Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010), and finally Peter Pan and Wendy (2023), the thesis is also committed to a discourse analysis of the concepts of childhood and growing up. As the thesis is concerned with works occupying a timeframe of over a century, the shifts in Western children's literature and film, as well as their introduction into the Disney machinery is also considered. Approaching this multitude of attitudes towards how child characters relate to adulthood and growing up, the thesis connects this issue in relation to the dynamic between the Western colonizer and the colonized subjects, as the former de-subjectivizes the latter in a similar dynamic to the one between adults and children.

Teoride ve pratikte görsel deneme: Deneme türü üzerinden bir ev sakininin hayatı

Montaigne's establishment of the essay as a literary genre brought about a revolution of the mind in that it made possible an infinity of new manner's of expressing thought and human emotion possible. The essayistic spirit thus born by Montaigne's midwifery infiltrated in the last century the artistic genres of film and photography. The essay found a visualized mode of practice, commonly observable in contemporary art today. This more recent embodiment of the essayistic expression, however, appeal to qualities and operates through principles that expand on what the literary genre entails. In light of what these are, this thesis explores the evolution of the essayistic from its literary expression discussed by Adorno and Lukacs, to its examples in film and photography and these examples' scholarly consideration in the available literature. Generic utility of the term essay is then problematized and "visual-essay" is proposed as a more proper and comprehensive term. The point of origin of these discussions are found in a visual-essay project, entitled "A(WAITING) HOME / EV (DE) BEKLER", which I have produced. Accordingly, the evaluation of the essayistic mode of expression in contemporary art is conducted in perspective of the thematic of home, home-dweller and the seemingly essayistic relationship of the two. This is done in terms of both a theoretical deliberation of home-dwelling, and a reflection upon how this thematic had been explored by my project, thus purposed to be reflective on home as much as on the very generic form in which it found expression, that is the visually- essayistic.

İslami yaşam tarzlarına görsel etnografik bir yaklaşım: Başakşehir örneği

This study, adopting the visual ethnography as a methodology by asking the participants to take photographs and comment on them, explores Islamic lifestyles that belong to different socio economic groups in Başakşehir 1. Etap (district) and 4.Etap. Başakşehir, as a gated community, is a place where the religious residents can freely lead their Islamic lifestyles with other religious people like themselves and enjoy many opportunities it has to offer. However, the class distinction between 1.Etap and 4.Etap creates a controversy in between. Especially their different lifestyles which manifest themselves most clearly in their consumption patterns lead a hostile relationship between two Etaps. While the most crucial factor of the differences in their lifestyles is the class distinction the others are the different interpretations of Islam and the modernity concern of Başakşehir 4.Etap residents with a higher economic level. This study provides an insight of these Islamic lifestyles differentiation depending on the iv socio-economic status by the help of the photographs that Başakşehir residents have taken.

Irak savaş fi̇lmleri̇: Alt tür beli̇rleme

This thesis analyzes a new subgenre of war films, concentrating on particular case of Iraq War films. Treating the war film genre within the notion of a historical event, war is here understood as a setting rather than a direct battlefield experience. Consequently, this thesis recognizes the subgenre of Iraq War films as encapsulating the experiences from both the warzone and homefront. The focus here is thus not only limited to the soldiers at the front, but also to their families, overseeing the trauma as happening in the U.S. While trying to distinguish the conventions of this new subgenre, this dissertation also focuses on the historical context of the war, comparing the War on Terror's context and representations to those of the World War II and Vietnam War. Ultimately, defining Iraq War films is set on the axis of the previous war films' conventions, the new technological nature of warfare, and an intimate link between the postmodern influence that affects both narrative and visual style of Iraq War films. Transgender deneyimin performansı: Esmeray Özadikti örneği

This thesis mainly deals with several foundational approaches to transgender identity and considers transgender experience as a concept to discuss transgender identity and politics in Turkey. This study considers the role of transgender voice in constructing a transgender subjectivity. Moreover, this study inquiries the production of transgender self through performance of experience and examines how it broadens the political and social territories of transgender identity and politics in Turkey. Esmeray's three performances, titled as Cadının Bohçası, Yırtık Bohça and Kestirmeden Hikayeler, are analyzed in order to contextualize the performance of transgender experience. It is concluded that Esmeray's performance of transgender experience moves beyond a mere theatrical representation of a trans woman. Rather, it is a productive method of struggle against heteronormative views on trans women in Turkey.
