Traffic Accident News in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Newspapers

Road traffic accidents are one of the major issues in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus for the individuals who are involved in a traffic accident, their families, loved ones and also for the government, which suffers from consequences morally and financially. This study aims to find out if the 151 news stories from six local newspapers in TRNC in July 2017 use yellow journalism by using sensationalism and its elements into traffic accident news stories to attract audiences by adding soft news values and to gain more profit from the stories. What is more, by employing quantitative content analysis, this study observes if the selected newspapers miss ethical liabilities while constructing the stories. The conclusion of this study indicates that more than half of the news stories have used sensationalism. Newspapers with more commercial concerns tend to show more sensationalism in the news stories. Thus, it is observed that journalist skip ethical liabilities, when it comes to respecting the news subjects’ identities and personal lives.

Brand Loyalty in the Construction Sector The Case of North Cyprus

“Construction sector occupies an important place in the economy of the TRNC, and parallel to the population growth, the demands for buildings continue to increase” (building construction and parcel statistics, 2009). The figures released by the State Planning Organization (SPO) indicate that Urban building has been increased by 13.4% from 131,619(1997) to 308,405 (2009) floor area (m2). This dramatic expansion will result in appearance of the more construction company and of course the more contracts will be signed among contractor and the customers. The objective of the thesis is to explore the source of customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction in the construction industry and understand how it can influence the brand loyalty to retain value customer and gain repeat business and to measure the brand loyalty influences. For this purpose a conceptual model were designed and be tested empirically by using structural equation modeling. Dimensions will be determined which can be significant predictors of overall home-buying satisfaction. In the field of construction, brand loyalty can be defined by having more contracts by the mean of loyal customer with the contractor. For this reason 14 hypotheses were defined and their relationships were tested on the sample of 101 respondents. The results provide empirical support and positive relationship for 10 of 14 hypothesis examined. Keywords: Construction industry, brand loyalty, customer satisfaction.

Financial Analysis of Wastewater Treatment Plant in Famagusta – North Cyprus

The aim of this study is to explore the unit cost of treated wastewater that farmers may be willing to pay per cubic meter for irrigation purposes in other to give up the use of underground water. For this, an appraisal for the wastewater treatment plant was undertaken using the cost-benefit analysis approach. The appraisal assesses solely the financial and sensitivity analysis to enable an efficient long term feasibility and sustainability of the wastewater treatment plant. The financial analysis conducted shows that the FNPV of the treated wastewater plant is positive and significantly large enough to generate high returns on investment for the municipality. Therefore, we can say that, the treatment plant project is feasible and it will be able to generate sufficient cash flows. Also, based on the sensitivity analysis results, it appears that the variables under observations are not sensitive enough to affect the FNPV of the project. At the end of this study, it was found that farmers in Gazimagusa – North Cyprus are paying higher for purifying wastewater (0.39 euros per cubic meter) when compared to what is obtainable by farmers in the South Cyprus (0.15 EUR per cubic meter) of treated wastewater.

Incremental Effect of Service Orientation, Perceptions of Organizational Politics, and Employee Engagement on Job Embeddedness in Hotels of North Cyprus

This research analyzes a reasonable model indicate that the rate of increase on job embeddedness as a result of service orientation in a low perceptions of organizational politics is higher compared to an organization with high perceptions of organizational politics. In addition, employee engagement has mediating effect on the relationship between service orientation and job embeddedness. Three hundred and seven employees with 47 manager groups were selected as samples 14 five-star hotels in Northern Cyprus for this study. The data were analyzed using the multi-level analysis following the hierarchical linear modeling considering the employees were nested in the departments. As hypothesized, the results demonstrated that the employee engagement partially mediates the effects of service orientation on job embeddedness. The results also indicated that interaction of service orientation and perceptions of organizational politics has negative influence on job embeddedness, which is an important signal to the hotels in the research context. Hotel managers must seek to adopt and focus on an excellent service orientation for training. Furthermore, new procedures and policies should be devised by the management of the lower star hotels within Northern Cyprus i.e. five-star hotels, which would aid in minimizing the possible effects of political decisions likewise adopting a more professional approach in the various aspects of their operations. In addition, there are very limited empirical researches have been conducted in the field of human resource and hospitality management on the links between employee engagements, perceptions of organizational politics, job embeddedness and service orientation. Hence, the significance of this study as it aims to fill the gap by examining the mediating and moderating roles of employee engagement and perceptions of organizational politics using a multi-level model for five-star hotel industry in Northern Cyprus is necessary. Empowerment, Wellbeing and Mindset of Female Ecotourism Entrepreneurs in North Cyprus

As a small island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus is striving to develop a sustainable tourism model. Despite the limited opportunities due to the ongoing political problems of the island, the number and activities of women ecotourism entrepreneurs in Northern Cyprus has shown inspiring growth over the last decade. This study examines the impacts of ecotourism initiatives on women’s gender roles, from the perspectives of women, who are influenced by the traditional lifestyles in a developing country, North Cyprus, stuck in a frozen conflict. It assesses the achievements and challenges women face in ecotourism and its impact on their empowerment and wellbeing and the effects of an incremental growth mindset. The empowerment of these women through tourism can lead to their flourishing - higher levels of wellbeing - that influences their commitment and further involvement in the sector. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were conducted to compare the results. The quantitative research model was developed based on the Self-Determination Theory. Our sample included 200 women ecotourism entrepreneurs in rural areas of Northern Cyprus. Our results show that women who have growth mindsets, i.e. those that believe people’s characteristics such as abilities are not fixed, benefit more from an empowering environment and reach higher levels of flourishing. A qualitative methodology with a feminist research was adopted to collect detailed information from forty female ecotourism entrepreneurs. Valuable information about their experiences, beliefs and attitudes, from the perspective of these female entrepreneurs, was collected through semi-structured interviews. The qualitative results supported that these women experienced an increase in their perceived economic, social and psychological empowerment and in their levels of wellbeing. However, due to gender inequality and the frozen conflict situation of North Cyprus, it was found that women who have a high growth mindset felt lower levels of wellbeing than those with a fixed mindset. This was because women with a high growth mindset were more aware of the limitations imposed on them by gender inequality and the political situation pertaining to North Cyprus which caused them to be frustrated. The research concludes that although all female ecotourism entrepreneurs experienced more empowerment and wellbeing, those with a high incremental mindset were frustrated by external factors which circumscribed their activities. The results can guide policy makers and stakeholder organizations in their efforts to support rural development, microfinance opportunities and women’s empowerment and well-being. Improved Traffic Crash Modeling through Accuracy and Response Time Using Classification Algorithms: A Model Comparison Approach

ABSTRACT: This research focuses on predicting the severity of freeway traffic crashes by employing two different dataset including Iranian and Cyprus data. In Iranian data, twelve variables related to crash parameters were used by considering genetic algorithm, combined genetic algorithm and pattern search, and artificial neural network methods. The genetic algorithm evaluated eleven equations to obtain the best equation, and then the genetic algorithm and pattern search methods were combined using the best genetic algorithm equation. The neural network used a multi-layer perceptron architecture that consisted of a multi-layer feed-forward network with hidden sigmoid and linear output neurons that can also fit multidimensional mapping problems arbitrarily well. In Cyprus data, seven variables were selected to compare two fuzzy clustering algorithms—fuzzy subtractive clustering and fuzzy C-means clustering— with a multi-layer perceptron neural network. Four clustering algorithms—hierarchical, K-means, subtractive clustering, and fuzzy Cmeans clustering—were used to obtain the optimum number of clusters based on the mean silhouette coefficient and R-value before applying the fuzzy clustering algorithms. The selected models used in Iranian and Cyprus dataset were able to predict the severity of crash injuries and to estimate the response time on the traffic crash data in which the prediction accuracy was determined according to R-value, root mean square errors, mean absolute errors, and sum of square error. Based on the results obtained from Iranian data, the highest R-value and the highest amount of time were obtained for the artificial neural network around 0.87 and 7.627 seconds, respectively. The results demonstrated that the artificial neural network provided the best prediction accuracy with highest response time, while genetic algorithm had the lowest value for prediction accuracy (0.79) and response time (0.687) among the applied models. The combination of the GA and PS methods allowed for various prediction rankings ranging from linear relationships to complex equations. Based on the results obtained from Cyprus data, the highest R-value and the highest amount of time were obtained for the multi-layer perceptron around 0.89 and 2.635, respectively demonstrating that the multi-layer perceptron had a high accuracy in traffic crash prediction among the prediction models, and that it was stable even in the presence of outliers and overlapping data. Meanwhile, in comparison with other prediction models, fuzzy subtractive clustering provided the lowest value for response time (0.284 ), 9.28 times faster than the time of multi-layer perceptron. Overall, the results showed that the MLP can be the best model to predict the traffic crash severity regardless of the variables involved with crash data in which the accuracy was the important criterion. Meanwhile, more than one model can be appropriate according to the determined criteria. Considering prediction accuracy and response time could lead to developing an on-line system for processing data from detectors and/or a real-time traffic database as well as the system may be implemented in an incident management to prevent the traffic crash or secondary traffic crash in which the model can be extended through improvements based on additional data through induction procedure. Effects of Internal Branding on Frontline Employees Work Attitudes and Behaviours: Exploring the Role of Psychological Contract as the Mediator, The Case of North Cyprus Hotels

This thesis develops an empirical model to test the effect of internal branding and brand-oriented leadership on employees’ service recovery performance and turnover intention, with a particular emphasis on psychological contract as a mediator. Using a quantitative approach, questionnaires were distributed among frontline employees of four- and five-star hotels in Northern Cyprus and responses were collected from. Statistical analyses were performed using the SmartPLS software. The results of the statistical analyses showed internal branding and brand-oriented leadership have a direct and positive effect on psychological contract. Psychological contact also positively influenced service recovery performance and negatively influenced turnover intentions. The results suggest that hotels need to establish effective IB mechanisms to convey their brand messages through internal communication, training, briefing and meeting. It was observed that the overall psychological contract guarantees a partial complementary mediation between internal branding and brand oriented leadership on service recovery performance and turnover intention. The theoretical contributions and managerial implications were discussed in this research.
