Abstract (EN)

Codification occupies an important place among modernisation attempts in the 19th-century Ottoman Empire. Relations between peasantry and owners of çiftliks were laid out especially through lâyihas (or, bylaws), and the reflections of changes in the relations of production and property became apparent in the form of codes. In this thesis, economic and social effects of codification attempts in the 19th-century Ottoman Empire will be studied in the context of critique of New Institutional Economics, and an examination of the issue will be aimed in the light of what happened in Parga. Leads gathered out of this issue regarding rural transformation in a period when production across the world became increasingly commercialized will be subject to a historical study that also utilizes archive documents.
