Abstract (EN)

Socio-economical and cultural aspects of 1929 in Izmir, a prominent city of Turkey with a significant trading potential, are studied in this research. Izmir, due to its location, had a very high commercial potential comparable to the other cities of Asia-minor. Besides being the third major city of Turkey, Izmir featured a high economical potential as a center of a great hinterland for the neighboring settlements as well as functioning as a gate to the overseas with its natural harbors. Covered in this study are together with the affects of such features, formation process of contemporary Izmir as a result of housing and town planning activities over the ruins of such a burned-down and destroyed location. This research also reflects repercussions of 1929 World Depression Era on Izmir.Important information on Izmir province and its administrative structure, municipal works in the city, population demographics, educational and town planning activities is provided in our study. Agriculture, animal breeding, industry, trade, port operations, cooperative systems, corporations, silviculture activities are reported to cover its economical characteristics. Social structure, movies, theatre, literature, art, festivities, daily life, health, fairs, literacy schools for adults, sports, transportation and communication works are depicted to study its socio-cultural features.In short, socio-cultural and economical structures of Izmir as of 1929 are atempted to be analyzed from a city chronicler?s point of view by utilizing detailed statistical data available.
