Abstract (EN)

Earthquake is one of the devastating natural disasters. According to elastic fracture theory describing the formation mechanism of earthquake, earthquake occurs by abrupt discharge of displacement energy deposited in the fractures called faults in the ground. Turkey lies in Alpine-Himalayan belt that is one of the most important seismic belts of the world. Located on the Anatolian Plate, Turkey is surrounded by African Plate and Arabian Plate in the south, Eurasian Plate in the north, East Anatolian Block in the east and Aegean Block in the west. With its location, Turkey is a zone with a high seismic risk. This case requires Turkey to take the necessary measures in the field of earthquake. Otherwise, the loss of life and property experienced in the past increases the likelihood of experiencing earthquakes in the future. The process of designing the structures in an earthquake-resistant manner officially started with 1968 code in Turkey. The codes need to be renewed on a regular basis as a result of varying construction methods together with devastating earthquakes, experimental studies, advancements in computer programs and developments in the technology. For this reason, "2018 Building Earthquake Code of Turkey" has been published by updating the "Code on Buildings to be Constructed In Earthquake Zones" that is the most recent earthquake zone. This newly-published code reveals that non-linear analysis methods come into prominence. Non-linear analysis methods used in evaluation of existing buildings have been started to be used in the design of new buildings. Calculation principals of prefabricated reinforced concrete buildings, light steel and wooden buildings have been presented as a separate section. Two new sections with the design rules pertaining to tall buildings and insulated buildings have been added. In addition to this, the concept of seismic zones have been removed by updating current Turkish Seismic Hazard Map. This thesis study consists of six chapters. The first and second chapter of the study describe the concrete models, cyclic behaviour of cross-sections, moment-curvature relationship, plastic hinge hypothesis for understanding non-linear behaviour. The third chapter describes the design principles of 2018 Building Earthquake Code of Turkey. In the fourth chapter, a representative housing structure dimensioned according to 2007 The Principles on the Buildings to be Constructed in Seismic Zones has been analyzed with the method of "Calculation in Time Definition Area" that is one of the non-linear methods. In the fifth chapter, 11 earthquake records to be used in the analysis have been selected from PEER and have been scaled in SEISMOMATCH program in line with the spectrum. In the sixth chapter, required evaluations have been conducted for the numerical results so obtained.
