Abstract (EN)
The surrounding architecture is definitely affecting most, if not all, aspects of individuals' lives. The nature of influence of architectural designs plays a significant role in the growing multiple structure of today's world through contributing to the variety of environment. The interpretations on how much positive or negative influence does the building have on persons provide evidence supporting this argument. Today, urban residences in cities are highly responsible for this influence with their contemporary architectural designs. Especially in recent years, the rapid growth in urban population has resulted to a high increase in the production of residences. Therefore, this research titled "Design based talking buildings" investigating the visual effects of residential buildings in the context of their designs is aimed at assessing the residential buildings in a visual manner and determining how people interact with buildings and thus putting forward the perspectives of residence inhabitants, architects and other occupational groups. This study discussed here includes five sections: This first section encompasses the object of the study and a brief literature review. The second section covers the necessary definitions such as the concept of perception, perception process, visual perception, etc. and further discussions on the dependence of these concepts on certain principles and the design factor influencing the visual perception. In the third section of the study, historical process of mass housing buildings, emerging, development and perception of residences are discussed under three separate headings and examples are given to demonstrate the issues that are raised in this paper. The fourth section deals with a field study. This section is intended to determine how residences are perceived by people in terms of visual effects in the province of İstanbul and to compare the influences on perceived parties. Therefore, three different residence types with different architectural designs were selected and a survey was conducted with subjects. The focus groups were divided into three categories: architects, other occupational groups and residence inhabitants. The results of findings obtained from the survey study and interpretations are discussed in the fifth section. Key Words: Influence, Perception, Visual perception, Design, Residence
