Target vocabulary of sixth grade students and their Turkish dictionary

Abstract (EN)

Dictionaries have always been one of the most important reference books from past to present for human beings need for knowledge, learning, and satisfaction of curiosity. Different kinds of needs and interests or branches have led different types of dictionaries to be prepared. From this perspective, dictionaries were limited and specialized in different aspects. The most used ones among the dictionaries are the ones prepared for students under the name of school dictionary. Many of these dictionaries have had the chance to have intercourse with school and students only in point of their names. Being compiled without identifying a clear target group, or doing research on any branch, the dictionaries have become distanced from meeting the needs and expectations of students. This situation has affected schooling conditions in a negative way and created a necessity to be written new dictionaries meeting expectations, satisfying the needs. In this context, writing new dictionaries reflecting students'learning experiences and using the coursebooks and workbooks which are the most important part of such experiences as the ground has come into prominence. In this study, within the framework of the questions "what is 6. Grade students" corpus and how can it be identified , is it possible to compile a new Turkish dictionary special for the 6th graders?" target corpus belonging to 6.grade students was identified, and by taking into consideration this corpus, a course based school dictionary special for the 6th-grade students has been compiled. The population of the study consists of 6th-grade Turkish course books and workbooks distributed to students in order to be taught at schools and decided by the Ministry of National Education, a different paradigm is not preferred. In this study, 8 books belonging to the Ministry of National Education and private publishing houses have been analyzed. Vocabularies in the books were listed with various methods and the vocabulary was brought into the form of a dictionary by being accepted as an entry. At the end of the study, 4769 vocabularies belonging to 6th grade were detected. While 3789 of the vocabularies as entry, the other 980 as idioms, proverb, exclamatory, foreign word, date expression, and abbreviation were added to the end of the dictionary. Writing course based dictionaries which will meet students' needs and interests and increase their enthusiasm to search and make them feel successful will undoubtedly affect teaching Turkish initially and positively along with other branches. This study is conducted to bring these goals about and it is expected from the study to bring a new perspective into school lexicography.
