Abstract (EN)

This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between coping strategies for earthquake stress and misscare needs among nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit who experienced the Kahramanmaraş earthquake on February 6, 2023. The research was conducted between September 2023 and June 2024 with 600 nurses working in the neonatal intensive care unit in the provinces of Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, Adana, Adıyaman, Osmaniye, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya and Elazığ. Following ethics committee permission, data were collected online through whatsapp, e-mail and google forms as data collection tools. The data were evaluated through SPSS 25.0 statistical program, and a statistical significance level of p<0.05 was selected. As a result of the research, it was found that 74% of the nurses were women, 42.3% were over the age of 30, 57.8% were undergraduate graduates, and 54.3% were married. 17.2% of the nurses experienced the earthquake in Adana, 15.0% in Kahramanmaraş and 11.2% in Gaziantep province. The mean score of "Religious Coping" sub-dimension, "Positive Reappraisal" sub-dimension and "Seeking Social Support" sub-dimension of the Earthquake Stress Coping Strategies Scale are "16.62±2.74", "17.85±3.31" and "13.25±1.97" respectively. It was also found that the most Misscare Survey needs of the nurses include "Assessment of procedures by the attendant", "Discharge planning and discussion regarding home care with the child and family" and "Patient and family education". Misscare Survey sub-dimension mean scores were found to be "9.86±2.91" for the "Employee-Related" sub-dimension, "14.40±4.42" for the "Communication-Related" sub-dimension and "9.44±2.76" for the "Material-Related" sub-dimension. The study concluded that there was a negative, statistically significant (p<0.05) and weak relationship between the "Employee Related" sub-dimension of the Misscare Survey questionnaire and the "Religious Coping" sub-dimension of the Earthquake Stress Coping Scale. It also concluded that there was no statistically significant relationship (p>0.05) between the "Communication Related" and "Material Related" sub-dimensions of the Misscare Survey questionnaire and the "Positive Reappraisal" and "Seeking Social Support" sub-dimensions of the Earthquake Stress Coping Scale. Necessary measures should be taken to reduce the factors that might affect the quality of care of nurses after disasters, such as insufficient personnel, lack of materials/equipment and communication problems. Religious/spiritual support and counseling services should also be offered to nurses.
