The analysi̇s of the change i̇n the mental models of the 7th grade students in terms of scientific value

This study was conducted to analysis of changes the mental models of secondary school students in terms of their scientific value with 311students at the 7th grade in A,B,C, schools in the province of central Kastamonu throughout 2014 -2015 academic year. The schools were selected according to their ranks at the TEOG examination. In this study, mixed method was employed where both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used. While qualitative section is survey method, quantitative section is pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. A data collection tool made up of three different sections was used. The tool was used twice as before and after the value was taught. The students' personal identifications, forming a metaphor and a drawing or a caricature were demanded. The mental models of students were split into as; scientific, semi-scientific and non-scientific. Consequently, there was a considerable increase in the scientific mental models in the post test rather than pre test of the students studying A and C schools regarding school variables, but there was a significant decrease in the non-scientific mental models. In school B there was almost no change in the scientific mental models; however, non-scientific mental models diminished. According to gender variable, there was a rise in the post test of boy and girl students. While scientific mental models of girl students were high, the change was eminent for boy students. This study is paramount for being the primary thesis in this area in Turkey. Also, new studies concerning with the area are recommended.
