Muhammedwho claimed his origins were from Hz. Ali?s family, brought the cast AfricanZanj slaves who hadbeen working in the big farms under hard conditions to hisbanner in H.255/M.869. Ali b. Muhammed?s army of slaves grew rapidly. In ashort time, the extanded his control and support over most of the countiyside ofSouthern Iraq and Khuzistan and dertroyed the villiges along with the owners.The movement reached its peak as a contingent of the Zanj army penetrated asfar as near Bagdat. For year the Zanj held the offensive successfully againstseveral Abbasids attacks. Finally the rebellion was crushed by Muvaffak whokilled the leader of the Zanj in H.270/M.883.
