The relationship between weight gain and ghrelin, obestatin and leptin levels in the breast cancer treated by adjuvant chemoteraphy

The Relationship Between Weight Gain and Ghrelin, Obestatin and Leptin Levels in The Breast Cancer Treated by Adjuvant ChemoteraphyIt is known that adjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer causes weight gain and causes to decrease at survival. It was aimed to evaluate relation between weight changes and ghrelin, obestatin and leptin levels in breast cancer patients after adjuvant chemotherapy.This study included 22 breast cancer patients after operation and 33 healthy volunteers for the control group. They were divided into 4 groups. Group 1 (n=17) body mass index (BMI) matched healthy group before adjuvant chemotherapy, Group 2 (n=16) BMI matched healthy group after adjuvant chemotherapy, Group 3 (n=22) breast cancer patients with before adjuvant chemotherapy, Group 4 (n=22) breast cancer patients group after adjuvant chemotherapy.Body weight increased significantly after chemotherapy (p<0.001). There were no relation between serum and saliva ghrelin, obstatin, leptin and menopausal status, histopathology, T stage, N stage, grade, vascular invasion, lenfatic invasion, estrogen reseptor, progesteron reseptor, c-ErbB2 status (p>0.05). The acylated and desacylated ghrelin levels was significantly decreased in Group 3 compared with Group 1 (p<0.01). There was also a similiar trend in Group 4 when compared Group 2 (p<0.01). However no statistically significant decrement was observed in Goup 4 when compared Group 3 (p>0.05). Serum obestatin levels exhibited no significant difference in all groups as well (p>0.05). Serum leptin levels in Group 4 was observed no staitistically significant decrement when compared with Group 2 and Group 3 (p>0.05). Saliva acylated and desacylated ghrelin levels in Group 4 demonstrated a significant increment when compared with Group 3 (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in all groups for saliva obestatin and leptin levels (p>0.05).In this study it was observed the breast cancer patients gained weight after adjuvant chemotherapy. Serum ghrelin levels decreased with breast cancer patients. But there was no relation between weight gain and serum leptin, ghrelin and obestatin levels.
