Abstract (EN)

Protective effect of saponin containing extract from Saponaria officinalis against X-radiation (XR)-induced oxidative stress in rat were evaluated for in lipid peroxidation (LPO) product and levels of glutathione. 100 Albino Wistar rats were divided ten group containin ten rats in each group. These groups are containing two control, two X-radiation (XR), one 100 mg/kg Saponaria officinalis extract (SE), two 100 mg/kg + XR, one 200 mg/kg SE and two 200 mg/kg SE + XR groups. We assayed the effects of XR and XR+administration of SE (100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg) on serum malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), reduced ascorbic acid (AA), retinol ß-caratone antioxidant activity (AOA) and urea-nitrogen concentrations in rats. All experimental parameters were found meaningful statistically except retinol concentration. When control groups compared with XR and SE giving groups, the plasma GSH (p <0.01) value significantly decreased in XR group but its value increased in extract groups. Only giving XR groups, the plasma MDA (p <0.01) value significantly increased with respect to control group but this concentration decreased timely. MDA values in all SE groups were found approximately to control group but this concentration were decreased in XR+ SE-treated groups. Vitamin-C concentration was decreased in SE group or control group compared with XR group and these falling values continued 21 days after giving radiation. When all radiation treated group compared with control and only SE treated groups, AOA (p <0.03) and ß-caroten values(p <0.013) significantly decreased in radiation treated group. Urea-nitrogen concentratins(p <0.001) were increased importantly in XR and SE treated group compared with control groups. The results showed that all extract have enhanced the antioxidant status and have decreased the incidence of free radical-induced lipid peroxidation in blood sample of rats exposed XR.
