Abstract (EN)
Wooden structures, which are commonly used in many countries around the world, have also been utilized in Turkey for many years. Deforestation, lack of fit trees, and the introduction of higher quality and inexpensive materials due to technological developments to the construction sector, are the reasons behind why wooden structures in Turkey have been replaced by reinforced concrete and steel structures. Following the destructive earthquake of 1999, which resulted in vast fatalities and immense economic losses, led to a search for alternative construction systems. The result first led to the confirmation of the importance of timber structures, which are more durable to the effects of lateral forces. It then progressed to the formation of companies producing said structures.Timber structures are prevalently known to withstand lateral movements. However, their behavior to earthquakes and winds, and the resulting consequences are unknown. The aim of this study is to create generally accepted standards in design, application, and control.Within this framework, the first chapter of this reading will introduce preliminary information, followed by the purpose and importance of the study. The second section of the study will provide insight to current standards applied to timber constructions and timber construction designs. The third section of the study will iterate the effect of winds and earthquakes on timber platform frame structures and their consequences. Within the fifth section of the study, details in regard to the standards that need to be applied to overcome the destructive effect of lateral movements will be mentioned. The last chapter will notate findings and suggestions.
