Abstract (EN)
In machining, cutting tip geometry, amount of progression and depth of cut have effects on chip breaking and surface roughness. Accurate metal cutting means getting to know about the working materials and selecting the right cutting tip geometry and quality. The relationship between optimum geometry and quality is the key to successful processing. This factor should be carefully considered and adapted to every processing operation. One of the most important problems in machining is inability of chip breaking. Chip breaking after cutting is directly related to the cutting tip geometry. This study researches into the effect of the cutting set chip breaker form on surface roughness and chip form. AISI 4140 steel was lathed in CNC lathe with lined carbide cutting sets with different tip geometries (TAEGUTEC brand). Tests were made for different cutting rates, cutting depths and progression rates. Surface roughness was measured on processed materials and values were interpreted. Generally, it was observed that the chip was broken more easily with increased progression rate but surface roughness increased at the same time.
