Seals of Turkish-İslamic period in Alanya Archeology Museum

This thesis aims at evaluating the 133 Turko-Islamic seals, all of which have been preserved at the storeroom of Alanya Archaeology Museum. The seals in the scope of this study have been assessed individually in terms of their dates, periods, materials, forms, usage areas, decorations, fonts and origins. As a result of the research to be conducted, it has been detected 75 of the seals to be dated to 19th century, 42 to 20th century, and the rest, that's 15, without any date. As the first two digits of four-digit date on a seal cannot be read absolutely, any dating is not available. The material of the seals is brass, silver, stone, bronze and another unknown metal which could not be determined exactly, is referred only as metallic in the related resources. The majority of the seals is elliptic. Besides, there are circular, octagonal, square and square-like rectangular seals. The usage areas of the seals can be handled under such three categories as official, personal and magic. It can be observed some stylized vegetal and geometrical motifs on the stamping side of the seals the majority of which seems to be plain. As for the fonts, the italic font is the most preferred writing style. It can be also observed the fonts of naskh and thuluth and some expressions in Latin on several seals. It has been concluded that the majority of the seals is related with somewhere in Inner Anatolian Region, though they are at Alanya Archaeology Museum. There are also some other seals concerning the regions of Aegean and Mediterranean. This study is expected to be a significant contribution to the sigillographical studies in Turkey
