Bacteriological profile of post-operative wound infections

Abstract (EN)

Post-operative wound infection is one of the most common problems in patients undergoing surgery. This situation, which contributes to morbidity and mortality and continues to be a common problem; has been attributed in part to an increase in infections due to antimicrobial-resistant bacterial pathogens. In this study, seventy-five bacteria isolate samples were collected and tested, and all samples were collected from patients between the ages of 3-60, regardless of gender, from patients who had a surgical operation or surgical wound infection. All samples were subjected to bacterial cultivation for identification and different bacterial strains causing wound infection after surgery were isolated. Among the bacteria isolated and identified, Staphylococcus aureus with a rate of 26.7% from the Gram-positive group and Escherichia coli with a rate of 73.3% from the Gram-negative group were found to be the dominant bacteria. All isolates were subjected to biochemical tests and the effect of some antibiotics on isolates was tested. The results obtained revealed that Amikacin is the most effective antibiotic on bacterial isolates. In addition, some virulence factors (hemolysis and bacteriocin) of the bacteria were also examined and the results showed that Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria have the ability to hemolysis. In addition, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria isolates were found to have the ability to produce bacteriocin.
