Abstract (EN)

Anatolia was rendered a new medium of culture and art for nearly two-hundred years between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries AC during the Seljuk rule. This medium developed due to the geographical location of the region and as a result of the conquest of Anatolia by Seljuks. In that period when political and cultural environment was complicated, surface embellishments pose a level of tolerance which knows almost no limits. Forms and compositions which form a mosaic of Islamic, pre-Islamic beliefs and local elements are apparent on stone, clay, wood or metal. The stone embellishments on architectural surfaces which are the core subject-matter of this study represent the surviving concrete examples of the Seljuk culture and art. The historical, social, political and intellectual milieu of the time was perused together with the characteristics of the embellishment elements and more than twenty architectural examples in five important centers were discussed as a result. The findings as a consequence of all research and examination efforts in this study were applied, with a perspective to explore ways to use this rich experience in today?s architecture, to ceramic materials in order to discover new expressions and designs.
