Alanya Red Tower (Kizil Kule) in context of Anatolian Seljuk defence structures

This thesis is an exploration of the Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) located in Alanya district. In the first chapter of the thesis, previous researches on medieval Anatolian Seljuk defence structures, the aim of the study and the methods that used were explained. The aim of this study is examined Red Tower to be considered within the defense architecture of Anatolian Seljuk in terms of the construction technique, plan type and material diversity it contains. In the second section of the study, historical development of Anatolian city, some monuments of medieval defence structures are analyzed. Another issue mentioned in this chapter is the examination of the points of the other middle age towers connected with the Red Tower. In this context, primarily, examples of the Ayyubid monuments of Syria, the bastions of Bosra and Aleppo castles which are the products of a similar construction tradition has been examined. Secondly, Kyrenia Castle and its bastions which was built and restored in the same period in Cyprus, which is close to Alanya, has been studied. Finally, 'Rumelihisarı', 'Yedikule' and Thessaloniki White Tower are researched as a later examples. In the third chapter, historical, architectural and structural properties of Alanya Castle were defined. In the fourth chapter, Red Tower was examined as a part of the Alanya Castle. The octagonal red brick tower protects the Shipyard which dates from 1227. The name derives from the more red color brick he used in its construction. The height of the tower that is octagonal in shape is 33 meters and it is 29 meters in diameter, its each wall is 12.5 metres long. Marble blocks of the antiquity are seen in the walls of the citadel. The repairs and the spolia materials have been studied in detail according to the other sections within the thesis. Detached spolia stones are classified as size, material type and shape. Another subject, widely given in the thesis is the repairs. The work is summed up with the evaluation of all the informations and recommendations.
