Examination of tepeliks in Ankara province

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to determine shape, dimension, material, technique, color, and ornamentation and composition features of tepeliks identified in museums of Ankara Province and to do technical drawing of them. In addition, it is also aimed at designing and applying new jewelries through utilizing these features of the samples under examination.Universe of the present study comprises of tepeliks in female head ornaments in Ankara Province; and sample of the study comprises of a total of 110 tepeliks in Ankara Province, 86 of which are in Ethnography Museum, 2 of which are in Prof. Ülker Muncuk Museum, 14 of which are in Beypazarı- City History Museum, and 8 of which are in Estergon Castle Turkish Cultural Center Etnography Museum.General and detailed photos of the identified tepeliks were taken; and shape, dimension, material, technique, color, ornamentation and composition features of the tepeliks were examined in accordance with the information forms prepared. Information forms were used for each examined product. Obtained data were transferred to the tables; and their frequencies and percentages were showed.According to the results obtained, it was determined that tepeliks are square or circular and mostly circular shape is preferred. It was seen that silver inlay technique is used mostly on the ground of the tepeliks; enamel, niello work and the hole technique is used a little; plastering and nailing are used intensely in ornamentation; and kazaz, filigree and wire work technique is preferred less. It was found out that mostly green, red, brown and blue are used in the tepeliks examined, but pink and black are not preferred much. It was seen that mostly flower, point, hexagram (Solomon?s Seal) and hand motifs are used; but tree, spica, square, eight-pointed star and human motifs are preferred less. It was found out that all of the examined tepeliks have the feature of a central composition. The examined tepeliks usually have central composition characteristics where this composition is mostly formulated in two types as central and peripheral. In the first type, composition emerges from the centre reaching the peripheral edges however, oppositely the second one evolves from the edges towards centre. Nevertheless, this second type is found out to be the most preferred one.Technical drawings of 30 tepeliks in information forms were done. 10 jewelry designs were prepared in accordance with determined features of tepeliks; and 3 of these designs were applied.*Tepelik(s) refers to the headwear used by countrywomen in Anatolia, ornamented with gold and silver currencies and some precious stones.Key Words: Tepelik, jewelry, head ornament, jewelry designs.
