Abstract (EN)

This study has been conducted on the obese and hyperlipidemic classified indivuduals who redirected through consultation from other clinics to the Akdeniz University, Nutrition and Dietetic Department, Adult Nutrition and Diet Polyclinics to determine the effects of Mediterrenean type eating habits, some foods and olive oil consumptions on the blood lipid profiles. Those indivuduals who have applied to Adult Nutrition and Diet Polyclinics for 3 months, aged over 18, having a body mass index (BMI) ? 25, classified as fat and/or obese, hyperlipidemic and having no other cronic disease have accepted for this study. The anthropometric measures, socio-demographics (age, sex, education status etc.) data, state of physical activities of the selected indivuduals were determined by questionnaria technique. Recorded blood lipid values in the patience folder requested by clinicians, food consumption frequency and one day food consumption recall records were collected. The relationship between food consumption records and low density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglyceride (TG) values showed that there are statistically significant relations between the consumption of salad with olive oil, half-fat cheese, half-fat milk, walnut and TG values; and of total olive oil, fresh fruit consumption and LDL values (p<0,05). A positive correlation (p<0,05; r=0,253; r=0,432) between red meat, chicked (with skin) consumption and TG values were determined. There was no correlation or difference between sunflower oil consumption and TG and LDL values. Fried food consumption and LDL values have shown a statistically significant positive correlation (p<0,05; r=0,272). It has found that those indivuduals performing physical activity have BMI lower than that of those not performing any activity. Meantime a positive correlation between physical activity and LDL value has also identified (p<0,05). In conclusion, as stated before for the Mediterranean Type Nutrition, it was determined in this study that consumption of suggested amounts of olive oil, fresh vegetables and fruits, walnut, half-fat dairy products, legumes and cereals can effect LDL and/or TG values in a positive way. On the other hand, in order to have general conclusions, studies with higher number of population and longer periods are needed.
