Modelling of total trihalomethane concentrations in Antalya-Konyaaltı water distribution system using deterministic modelling approach

Abstract (EN)
Disinfection of water is crucial to prevent waterborne diseases that are transmitted by contaminated water. With this aim, different disinfectants are used because of the various criteria of disinfection (economical, residue, toxicity etc). In our country, chlorine is the most used disinfectant in water treatment plants. It is preferable because it is cheap, efficient, easy to apply and form chlorine residuals. During the process of disinfection of water, beside disinfection; however at the same time chlorine reacts with organic matters in water and form disinfection by products (DBPs). The impacts of DBPs on human health were investigated and it was found that DBPs have cancerogenic effects. DBPs are called trihalomenthanes (THM) when chlorine is used as a disinfectant in the disinfection process. It is necessary to analyze and control the concentration of THM for public health. In this work, the growth rate of THM in Antalya-Konyaaltı water distribution system was determined in the laboratory. Additionally, field sampling for THM analysis was done in Boğaçay pumping station and two other sub-regions (4th and 8th) that supply water to the region. Moreover, modeling study for chlorine and THM was applied in these two sub-regions Konyaaltı su dağıtım şebekesi için Toplam THM büyüme hız katsayısı (K), Boğaçay pompa istasyonundan alınan ham su numunesinin, laboratuvar ortamında şebekeye dozlanan klor (0,5±0,05 mg/L) baz alınarak 200C ve 300C sıcaklıklarda tespit edilmiştir. 200C için belirlenen büyüme hız katsayısı 0,4473 gün-1(R² = 0,5496) ve 300C?de ise 0,4705 gün-1(R² = 0,5991) olarak tespit edilmiştir. EPANET su kalite ve hidrolik modeli kullanılarak toplam THM izleme çalışması yapılmıştır. Ayrıca çalışmada Antalya-Konyaaltı su dağıtım şebekesi için klorun bozunma hız katsayısı (kb) 200C ve 300C sıcaklıklarda tespit edilmiştir. 200C için klor bozunma hız katsayısı kb=0,209 gün-1(R² = 0,9598) ve 300C için ise kb= -0,7191 gün-1(R² =0,7933) tespit edilmiştir.
