Examination of the landscape toponimi in Antalya-Serik region

In this research, landscape toponimies were examine in Serik Region, Antalya which was chosen on account of the diversity of its landscapes as dunes, pine forests, agricultural fields, rural settlements, which are unique to the region, and of the diverse place names such as Pine Grove, Sea Hill and White Water. Landscape toponimi is the evaluation of place names within the landscape as a tool to understand different features of the landscape. Methodological approache of the study is to analyse place names and landscape characters that embedded in and reflect by the names. Total number of 1243 place names that belong to 57 village/town, 302 hill/mountain, 419 site, 15 field, 114 river/stream and 63 well/cistern were analysed in 7 groups with 20 landscape characters using chi-square testing. Location names were found to be the most common place names in Serik while vegetation was the most common landscape characters in the place names. Statistically important relations between the place names and the landscape characters that embedded in the names such as natural features, land use, socio-cultural and visual showed that place names significantly reflect the characters in the landscape.
