Abstract (EN)

This thesis interprets an intact kitchen context belonging to the Middle Bronze Age palace at ancient Alalakh/Tell Atchana that was excavated during the 2009 season. By examining its architecture and artifact assemblages, with a particular attention to the pottery repertoire, this thesis aims to comprehend how an ancient palace kitchen was organized and how it could reflect an essential part of daily life at a palace. Using the rare opportunity of having an intact context, this research examines the structure of a kitchen space and the nature of food preparation according to the attributions of the pottery assemblage and its distribution. In addition, this study seeks a possible date for this kitchen by comparing its pottery assemblage to those of various sites from different regions of Syria and southern Anatolia. It will contribute to comprehend the little-known earlier Middle Bronze phases of Alalakh and provide an insight to the possible foodways at a Middle Bronze Age palace.
