Ibn Rushd's interpretation of aristotle's concept of substance

The primary aim of this study is to examine Aristotle's concept of substance within the framework of Ibn Rushd's philosophical interpretation and to reveal the theoretical continuity and transformation between the two thinkers regarding their understanding of being. In this context, the research analyzes how the concept of substance is grounded on both ontological and epistemological levels, addressing subtopics such as definition, the matter-form relationship, and the universal-particular distinction in detail. Ibn Rushd's effort to reconcile Aristotelian metaphysics with the Islamic intellectual tradition is evaluated not merely as a classical commentary activity but also as an original philosophical stance. In this regard, the concept of substance is interpreted as a foundational principle in the relationship between reason and revelation. The study aims to reveal the determining role of substance in the historical development of metaphysical thought, particularly in shaping the understanding of knowledge and truth. The findings of the study indicate that Aristotle defines substance as the primary bearer of existence and the principle of definitional priority, and that this understanding is restructured by Ibn Rushd to form a basis for both rational and divine interpretation. While Aristotle's conception of substance is based on the unity of matter and form, Ibn Rushd expands this view in harmony with empirical observation, rational analysis, and interpretation of religious texts. For both philosophers, substance is not merely an explanation of what exists, but also a fundamental principle that makes knowledge possible. However, Ibn Rushd does not confine the concept to a purely philosophical level; instead, he interprets it as a key element in legitimizing the relationship between philosophy and religion. Thus, Ibn Rushd's understanding of substance, inspired by Aristotle's system, transforms into an original and multilayered metaphysical approach within the Islamic intellectual tradition.
