Abstract (EN)

The Matchbox is one of the tangible remnants of the match industry, which was the first industrial initiative in the establishment phase of the Turkish Economy but could not survive in the Turkish market under changing economic conditions today. Matches and boxes used to light fires to meet primary needs have been an important part of daily life in Turkey from the 1900s to the 2000s. In addition to its basic consumer goods technical function, it was used as a social engineering tool for maintaining social common memory and raising public awareness through graphical elements on the box; it became an economic unit that replaced change in shopping; in daily conversations as a unit of measure and expression. In this context, matches and boxes are a mass manufacturing object that is one of the movable industrial heritage of Turkish industrial culture. In this study, the Turkish Match Industry was examined by biographical method, a sample group consisting of 1.505 domestic manufacturing boxes in the collection containing approximately 25.000 matchboxes belonging to Doç. Dr. Haluk Sağlamtimur was determined, this sample group was analyzed and catalogued with archaeological methodology, and all the intangible and intangible remains obtained were evaluated and archived with contextual archaeology approach. This work is unlike one-dimensional industrial archaeology studies that deal with industrial heritage in its purely architectural and technological dimension. This study, which is carried out on the basis of the opinion that the service and product produced also relates to the society, has an up-to-date and interdisciplinary perspective. The purpose of this study, which determines the remnants of matches and boxes about technological, social, political, economic and cultural structures that constitute an important place in the production-consumption relations and daily life of the period, is determined and interpreted contextually; to contribute to the sustainability of industrial cultural heritage by preparing documentation that can be used as an infrastructure in the creation of a Turkish Match Industry Archive that will be presented to the public interest. Keywords: Movable Industrial Heritage, Industrial Archaeology, Turkish Matchbox Industry Archive.
