Abstract (EN)

This study aimed to evaluate the seismic performance of a typical of RC precast structure that was designed for the highest seismic region in Albania. The high seismic activity of the country, the deficiencies of old design codes and seismic maps and the considerable number of reinforced concrete precast structures that were designed prior to the aseismic regulations came to force, highlight the importance of this study. An optimal seismic strengthening alternative, referring to the observed deficiencies in these structures is suggested. Specifically, an alternative brace characterized by significant energy dissipation and early activation properties is developed. Improvement in terms of strength, stiffness and ductility without requiring foundation strengthening, confirms the suggested alternative as the optimal strengthening scenario. The study is further extended by creating an enhanced version of the alternative brace, in order to produce minimal residual deformations and to be applicable in new structures as well that target a high seismic performance.
