ivSYNTHESIS OF NEW SCHIFF BASES AND THEIR METALCOMPLEXES FROM AMINES ARE PREPAREDWITH REDUCTION OF AROMATICNITRO COMPOUNDS(Ph. D. Thesis)Dilek NARTOPGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYAugust 2006ABSTRACTIn the present study, firstly, two nitro Schiff bases were synthesizedfrom the reaction of 2-nitrobenzaldehyde and 5-nitro-2-furaldehydewith o-aminophenol. The nitro groups of the Schiff bases werereduced with Na2S2O4. The amino compounds obtained were reactedwith different aldehydes. Therefore, seven new assymmetric diiminecompounds and their Fe(III) and Ni(II) complexes were synthesized. The structures of the ligands and the complexes were characterizedby elemental analyses, spectroscopic methods, TGA, LC-MS, magneticsusceptibility and conductivity measurements. All the complexes, except one, were found to have dimeric structure. Square planargeometry for two complexes and octahedral geometry for the othercomplexes were suggested.Science Code : 201.1.005Key Words : Assimmetric diimine coumpounds, Fe(III) and Ni(II)complexes, Schiff bases, reduction, reduction ofNO2 groupPage Number : 155Adviser : Prof. Dr.Perihan GÜRKAN
