Abstract (EN)

In this study, water quality, metal accumulation in tissues and effects of contaminants to GSH (Glutathione) redox status, oxidative stress and neurotoxicity potential in liver, muscle and brain tissues together with biometric features in Clarias gariepinus were assessed at five selected stations in Lower Seyhan Plain drainage channels. In the water quality assessments, the 1st station was observed to be cleaner than other stations and other results were evaluated according to the results of this station. Drainage water was found to be not suitable for irrigation and healthy development of fish. Accumulation of Fe, Cu, Zn, Co, Cr, and Cd were highest in liver and lowest in muscle. The difference between tissues for Fe, Cu, and Zn was statistically significant. The order for Pb is brain>liver>muscle. Metal concentrations in muscle tissue were generally within the permissible safety levels. Fe concentration in all stations and Pb concentration in the 3rd station are around the upper limit of permissible safety levels. The bioaccumulation under current progress will be likely to raise dangerous levels for public health. The results of biochemical analysis conducted in liver, muscle and brain tissues and examined bioindicators in C. garipinus, show that C. gariepinus have developed several adaptations to increased pollution. Findings showed that C. gariepinus is a resistant species to environmental pollution.Combined investigation of water quality parameters, tissue contaminant levels, biomarkers and bioindicators were enable obtaining more effective results when determining pollution levels and their effects to fish. Keywords: Lower Seyhan Plain, Water Quality, Clarias gariepinus, Biomarkers, Bioindicators.
