Abstract (EN)

The history of Mehter which is known as the oldest military Band of the world depends upon the centuries before Christ and Middle East. It is known that the musical instruments named ?Kübürge? and ?Tuğ (horsetail)? are mentioned in the inscriptions of Orkhon that were written in the 8th century and is the oldest written source of Turk History. In the oldest Alphabetical Turkish Dictionary, named Divan-ü Lügat-it Türk which is an other written source reached extant from XI. Century, we obtain the information that the musical group beating nevbet (a kind of military band?s performance) in the presence of Khan, named as ?Tuğ?.It attracts the attention that the name ?Tuğ? was turned into Tabılhane (military Band?s of the Sultan?s place) and Nevbet since the time of Seljuks and Mehter musical in the time of Ottoman?s and become traditional. It is known that Gıyasettin Mesut the II, who was the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan, sent Osman Bey, sovereignty order, as well the title of privilege, horsetail, flag, tube, cymbal, drum and small kettle drum which were the fasces in 1289. This incident in history is accepted the first establishment of Mehter in the Ottoman?s. Mehter?s organisation has been established by a high rank officer named Emir-i Alem and The Head of Mehter Master who was an officer in charge of Mehterhane and tied to Emir-i Alem. Mehter was tied to Mehterbaşı in charge to music and to Emir-i Alem in charge to ruling. Mehter was managed in the frame of hierarchic relationship between Emir-i Alem and the head of Mehter Master. The mehter tradition of Ottoman?s has been transformed into an official governmental organization tied to Palace and Padishah as from XVI.Century.Mehter?s Organization had been removed from the position of serving only to Palace by several laws as from XVI. Century. It is known that limited entitles for constituting Mehter had given to Grand Viziers, Viziers who had taken office in either adminisrative or military state organization and to the people who had equal authority and to Grand-Governors and Governers of the Sanjaks at diiferent stratums. Mehter Band, as being their fundamental duty, by performing their music which was active and dynamic, at wartime, had enthused the soldiers, but terrorized and intimidated the enemies. Mehter which is philosophical movement of Turkish Community, had been the enthusiasm and the delight of Turkish Victories. In 1826, Sultan Mahmud II. had abolished the Janissary Organization and subsequent to starting regeneration movements, also Mehterhane which was the part and symbol of the Army had abolished and instead a ?Military Band? team has been established as being in European Governments. We witness the re-establish of Mehter in the constitution of Military Museum in 1914 to represent Mehter Band symbolicly. Mehter, obtaining in Military Museum through World War I, Independence War and in the first years of Republic, had been abolished again by The Minister of Defense, Zekai Apaydın in 1935 for the reason of being deficient as compared to the original. In 1952, The Mehter Band has been established again in the constitution of Military Museum by the orders of the then Chief of General Staff, General Nuri Yamut. In the present time, In the Military Museum, to observe the representative reflection of tracks in the past of Mehter?s facts in the sense of our age?s characteristics and to recall this fact is possible. The culture of Mehter is a fact that it has been in close proximity with the structure of Turkish community, fed on with it, complicated but with its hierarchic system, it has specified its rules, embraced the community from the Sovereign to simple citizens and has become a symbol for ages in Turkish World. This fact which fundamentals has been formed by drum and clarion, still subsisting nowadays in the antiquities of Turkish Community, has been the philosophical movement of Turkishness. In this ongoing study with the worry of expressing this fact in different ways, in the direction of acquired and shared information, and by taking advantage of visual richness exhibited during the presentation of the music performed by Mehter?s Band, It?s being endeavored for the transformation of traditional Mehter?s musical instruments and clothings? commentary to artistic ceramic objects from the angle of plastic arts. It is possible to trace the reflections of hierarchical structure constituting the fundamentals of formation of Mehter?s Organisation, in the designed artistic ceramic objects. As being taken basics of these principles, the transformation period has been specified, and following this process, the artistic ceramic objects has been represented for your information.
