Assessment of urbanization history of Addis Ababa city, Ethiopia

ASSESSMENT OF URBANIZATION HISTORY OF ADDIS ABABA CITY,ETHIOPIA The general aim of this research was to examine the historical evolution and challenges of urbanization in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and to identify the driving factors behind this urbanization process. The study employed a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach, the study utilized both qualitative and quantitative methods to gather, analyze, and interpret data related to the urbanization history and challenges of the city. Addis Ababa urbanization process began in 1886, has resulted in significant physical, social, and economic changes, including fast expansion of built-up areas and high population growth. However, this urbanization has also brought about challenges such as housing shortages, informal settlements, environmental degradation, transportation issues, and high rates of unemployment in a city. These challenges have particularly affected residents in suburban and informal settlements, leading to poor living conditions, limited access to essential services, like piped water, electricity and other municipal services and increased vulnerability to environmental threats. Furthermore, the study identified influential factors driving urbanization, including rural-to-urban migration, economic opportunities, and the city's centrality as a political and cultural hub. Based on these findings, the study recommended comprehensive urban planning, sustainable development initiatives, and focused interventions to address the challenges faced by the city. These measures aim to improve living conditions, enhance access to opportunities, and mitigate environmental risks for the city's inhabitants. In conclusion, the research revealed a complex urbanization history and a multitude of challenges faced by Addis Ababa. The study's insights provide a basis for developing targeted interventions and evidence-based policies to promote sustainable urbanization and improve the quality of life for the city's residents.
