Opportunities of the material in the context of On Kawara's artwork

This thesis is a continuation of my master's thesis. Considering the history of art of painting, 3 stages have been identified in the process of handling the material as an art practice. The first two phases were discussed in my master's thesis titled The Relationship of Tactile Effect on Painting With Material Experience in accordance with the field research. In the thesis, the materials in two and three dimensions were determined. During the process of efficiency in art, the third stage was included, and artistic productions in which the thought was surrounded by various layers were mentioned. The conceptual framework that emerged with the performative structures in which the body is involved, the disappearance of the art-life line and the inclusion of social relations in the art object formed the main axis of this thesis. This work, which focuses on material in art, is fed by the productions of Japanese artist On Kawara. Kawara's works, although initially figurative, have become known in the Conceptual Art movement over time. The reason why Kawara was chosen for the work is that the artist has experienced three different types of materials that summarize the history of art. It is one of the aims of this thesis to examine Kawara through three layers and fields of experience: dyestuff, material outside of paint, and writing. Kawara, an artist who has experienced his art and his life intertwined, has associated his artistic productions with the theme of death. He was influenced by his country's difficult situations and created his entire art practice through this influence. In the first part, the material and material perception in the history of art is emphasized; Conceptual Art and material relationship has been established. In the second part, the works of the artist were tried to be positioned under the titles of dyestuff as material, material other than paint and writing as material. In particular, it has been observed that writing as a material covers both other types of material. The fact that writing takes place in works produced using both dyestuff and materials other than dye necessarily led to the examination of the representation possibilities of writing in the plastic arts and the establishment of a writing-painting relationship. Moreover, the works of the artist are examined in terms of layered structure, stratification and so on. tried to be examined through terms. Here, there are situations such as the stratification of materials and the stratification of mediums; studies were approached through unit repetitions.
