Asthma control and quality of life in childrens diagnosed with asthma

This descriptive study and cross-sectional was conducted to determine asthma control and quality of life in childrens diagnosed with asthma. The study was carried out with 100 children between the ages of 10 and 18 who were diagnosed with asthma between 01.01.2019 and 31.06.2019 in Yozgat City Hospital Pediatric Emergency Service, Child, Health and Diseases Service and Pediatric Outpatient Clinic. The data were obtained by face-to-face interview technique using "Child and Parent Information Form", "Self-Efficacy Scale for Asthmatic Children and Adolescents" and "Quality of Life Scale for Children". Independent groups t test and One-way Anova test were used to evaluate the data. Before starting the study, verbal and written permission from the participants and ethical committee approval from the institutions were obtained. In the study, it was found that 58.0% of the children were between the ages of 10-14 and 61.0% were boys. It was determined that 73.0% of the families had a history of asthma, 44.0% were smoking at home. It was found that 51.0% of the children included in the study were diagnosed with asthma 0-3 years ago and 66.0% used their drugs alone. It was determined that 85.0% of the children did not attend school, 79.0% had asthma in the last year and 40.5% of these children did not attend school. It was found that the self-efficacy mean scores of the children who had knowledge about asthma were statistically significantly higher than those who did not (p<0.05). As children have sufficient information, their quality of life and self-efficacy levels also increase. , it was determined that children and adolescents had a mean score of 72.44 ± 18.81 for Self-Efficacy Scale for Asthmatic Children and Adolescents and 62.32 ± 14.90 for Quality of Life Scale for Children. A positive and moderate correlation was found between the total score of the self-efficacy scale for children and adolescents with asthma and the total score of the Quality of life scale for children. As a result, according to the scale scores in our study, it was observed that the quality of life and self-efficacy level of children with asthma was low. It is important for parents to know about home intervention methods for children with asthma and to remove the factors that trigger asthma from the environment, to provide a safe environment and to provide the necessary training by health personnel on these issues.
