Abstract (EN)
Biological hydrogen production is considered as alternative technology for future. However, studies on hydrogen production via biological process, yield and formation rates of hydrogen gas are low. Therefore, the main fields of researches are to improve biohydrogen gas production by using different materials as substrate, recently. The objective of this thesis to investigate hydrogen gas production potential from waste paper by dark fermentation and to find optimum substrate concentration and optimum microorganism concentration for hydrogen production from waste paper. For this purpose, biohydrogen gas production studies were carried out with using different substrate concentrations and different microorganisms concentrations. Heat treated anaerobic waste sludge was used as mixed microbial culture. Waste paper which was hydrolyzed in dilute acid at high temperature was used as substrate for this study. Fermentation process was carried on at 37 celsius degree in incubator. Total gas production, percentage hydrogen in total gas, hydrogen gas volume and sugar concentrations were monitored daily throughout the experiments. Total volatile fatty acid analysis was performed at the end of experiments. Hydrogen production rate, stationary phase and hydrogen formation potential were calculated by applying Gompertz equation on the cumulative hydrogen gas production datas. Calculations were performed with Statistica program. In the end of experiments, highest cumulative volume of hydrogen gas concentration was obtained as 125.89 mL in the end of 120 hours with 20 gram per liter initial substrate concentration and 1 gram per liter initial biomass concentration. The sugar concentration above 20 gram per liter cause substrate and product inhibition. Maximum hydrogen yield was observed in 5 gram per liter total sugar concentration as 139.58 mL hydrogen per gram total sugar. Hydrogen yield decreased with increasing initial sugar concentration due to inhibition of VFA and presence of furan derivatives resulting acid hydrolysis of waste paper.
