Describing the notion of space through the concept of atmosphere and relations between time-subject-object

This thesis seeks out the meaning the additional quality that the concept of "atmosphere" brings to the space as an invisible element. This study researches the atmospheres and their components as a part that transforms the space to a living area in life. Through the concept of atmosphere, this study strives to decipher the space that is in between the materialistic and non-materialistic substance, and that communicates with human in a manner that is both physical and sensory. The study specifies the three dimensional entity that flows in space, with mathematical calculations. The part of the space which is formed with impression, that is not suitable for mathematical description, again have the same characteristics as the three dimensional part. This characteristic about impression can be expressed as "the atmosphere of the space". The concept of atmosphere as a sensory object can guide the understanding of the space. The whole process of understanding this specific space, presents the contents that separate this specific space from the others and also takes human to the essence of the space. While approaching the notions of space and atmosphere; what the space is becomes from and what kind of quality atmospheres brings to the spaces are questioned. If spaces are dynamic objects, which are changing by the perception of subject, how this dynamism can be explained have been searched. Through the concept of atmosphere spaces have their own characteristic way. There are many elements forming the atmospheres. Thereby, by its atmosphere the space will transmit its meaning on its own becoming. Based on that, what role plays as elements time, subject and objects to the space atmosfer have been searched. Using the notion of atmosphere of space, the characteristics of the space can be analysed. Many side factors are effective in the change or the alteration of the characteristics. Multiplicity of the variables generates different meaning intervals. These different meanings develop and expand by integrating with new situations and concepts. Thereby, space has a structure that is stable as a three dimensional space, but dynamic with evolving characteristics. Spaces that have atmosphere communicates with people. The space gains meaning with its experiences and by the impressions of the people. These meanings give opportunity to new experiences and new existences. The space transforms in time and becomes manufactured in a new meaning. Thus, atmospheres (a meaningful architecture) allow existences and dynamism. In a life that is focused on the act of understanding, atmospheres and spaces unite as a part of life to merge with the essence. The thesis of "Describing The Notion of Space Through The Cencept of Atmosphere And Relations Between Time-Subject-Object" aims to understand the atmospheres that emerge with the relationship between the concepts of time, subject and object, through the space interface. The time where the meanings come into existence as an interface, is an important phenomenon to comprehend the space. The things that existed in different periods of time, become apparent by the agency of space. The meaning of atmosphere that is hidden in the roots of the space is a merged and intertwined form of time, object and subject. The objects collect stories by reflecting the acts and experiences of the subjects. This collection occurs within time and the surface of the space. In other words, atmosphere of the space is a changing concept with the time and variant nature of object. As an entity that is above all this components, the subject that is capable of thinking and interpretation, evaluates the meaning. In this context, the thesis consist of four main parts. Second and third part are consist of literature study. Second part researchs the notion of space through the different disciplines and he relations between time, subject and object. Seeks to dig up the meaning of space and try to find out that the meaning are forking. Third part of the study researchs perception and atmospheres. Atmospheres are associated with peceptions. Thereby, third part connect those notions and try to find out interfaces which helps to apprehend the thesis. Fourth part of the thesis consist of two different case studies. First part of the case study, inspections are made on three selected buildings to reveal the concept of atmosphere. The buildings that the global architectural community takes notice like Therme Vals, Lighthouse Church, Jewish Museum Berlin, are structures in which the architects try to create specific atmospheres with their approach to design. In this context, through the concept of atmosphere, fist literature research have been done about selected buildings. Over from article and textes about builging and taken photos are main sources. Study researches the atmosphere and quality of the space via narration of architectural approach by architects and comments of the visitors of the selected buildings. On the comments of the selected buildings, the sensual effect of the space on the visitors are detected. What is expressed most in the comments of the visitors, is how they feel while inside, instead of the quantitative features of the buildings. The spaces which communicate with the occupants through senses are separated from the other spaces with their atmospheres. Second and the main part of the case study, focuses on the atmospheres with the relations between tie, subjects and objects. German war building bunkers are choosen as a research area. As the topic of atmosphere within such a meaningful space as a former war building is perceived in a subjective way, the questionnaire follows the aim in working out a generalized way how these today still existing concrete structures are seen in the circle of stakeholders. The changes from the past to present in the atmosphere of bunker building are explored in accordance with the usage of spaces. In order to obtain a broader vision in the research, three different bunker buildings used for different purposes are investigated. During the research on these specific bunkers the high amount of todays' different stakeholders such as workers, researchers, salesperson, waiters, musicians, students and visitors are remarkable. Mediabunker, Museumbunker and Energybunker are selected examples with in the concept of study. Both buildings are examined through the concept of usage of space, time, subject and object which brings the quality of different types of atmospheres. Specific information about the buildings are gathered through the private meetings with the inhabitants, the observation of the utilization of the space around one year long and personal experience of the space in a different times of a day and week . By means of surveys, the perceptual relationship between the past and present is attempted to be understood, and also the characteristics of the atmosphere within the space are exposed. A group of 50 people, which are between 20-60 years old and have different types of profession, have been surveyed in different period of time. People are surviyed directly after their visit from the selected bunkers. Thereby, research seeks to get fresh expressions from visitor after thir visit. What kind of quality brings in to the space within different usages have been searched. According to results, visitors consider that the usage of space significantly effects the atmospheres. In four categories the life inside the bunker in the time of war and today determine a nearly opposite atmosphere within the same buildings: Meanings, actions, objects and emotions have changed in an immense way. After all the timeline of the usage of bunker are reflecting a lot of the history since the second world war till today. The results show that individuals perveive a change of the bunker through the usage and discover a different atmosphere than before. At the same time, the visitors stated that the buildings have roots from the past while containing the change. People believe in that bunker has different atmospheres then before but at the same time it reminds the past what happends in the war time. Although this old war atmosphere gives a scary feeling, they have more positive feelings about building. Becouse they see bunker as a symbol of everyhting can chance and things are getting better. This study aims to reveal the characteristics that awakes sensation in a person that is present in a space and the atmosphere of the space that emerges in the sense of that person. The study reminds the importance of atmosphere as a discipline of understanding space and emphasizes space as a dynamic living particle. Notion of atmosphere is an important thing to understand the space and how it effects persons emotions. Through the atmosphere concept spaces have their own characteristic perception in the person mind. It helps to understand that buildings can communicate with man's own existence in that way. Study aims to put forward that architecture is something which is related to the center of life and man's emotions.
