Energy efficiency and management in integrated steel plants of Turkey in the process of membership to European Union

Abstract (EN)

This study aims to show energy saving potential of integrated steel plants as partof energy intensive industry which is one of the important parameters for Turkey?sdevelopment in the process of membership to European Union.In this study, energy balance and energy efficiency definitions have beenexplained as a priority. For detailed energy balance analysis, the best specific energyconsumer integrated steel plant that is the lowest energy consumer plant to produceper ton crude steel, has been determined as a model among the three integrated steelplants of our country. Energy consumptions for these steel plants were distributed toall production lines and from this distribution, the facilities which represent 50/60%of total energy consumption of steel plants have been chosen for detailed energybalance analysis. Three important production facilities (coke plant, blast furnaces andslab furnaces) which represent 59,2% of total energy consumption of the plant wasanalyzed as energy intensive facilities. Steam Boilers and Slab Furnace No. 2 havebeen ignored because of the difficulties occurred during their energy measurementand data collection.Input and output energy for the investigated facilities was equalized. Potentialenergy saving opportunities among the output energy sources was determined andsome theoretical and practical solutions were suggested.
