The situation analysis of the Sports High Schools in Turkey based upon the Sport Education of the European Union

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the situation of the sports high schools in Turkey based upon the sport education of the European Union. Academic and athletic educations of talented athletes that are in the reports of departments related to physical education and sport of European Union, are going to be gradually more important. It is known that Turkish Sports High Schools have also established in accordance with this purpose. Method :This study, is essentially a comparative education study, is a mix method study that have both qualitative method and quantitative method. Alongside qualitative dimensions like documents analyses and focus group discussions of this study, the survey of the situation analyses of Turkish Sports High Schools that is prepared by author, creates quantitative dimension in this study. Findings: According to results of this study, Turkish sports high schools can't implement academic and athletic objectivesthat have been determined in 2004, establishment year of them by Ministry of National Education of Turkey. In the final section of this study, Turkish sports high schools have been compared with similar educational systems based upon national strategies in the Eurydice reports and another report called European Union guidelines on dual careers of athletes. The similar educational systems in the Europe give talented athletes opportunities like high-level academic and athletic special educational programs, curriculum based on academic and athletic success, top class sports facilities have got educational, athletic and health centers, and scholarships advantages. Results : As a conclusion, the situation of Turkish sports high schools has been shown it is inadequate according to their equivalent schools in Europe, and some sports high schools models that helps to make talented athletes better, have offered governmental agencies by author.
