Synthesis and characterization of epoxy resin containing azomethine

Abstract (EN)

New epoxy resins were prepared from hydroxy substituted Schiff base monomers through two steps. The first step is synthesis of hydroxy substituted Schiff base compounds by condensation reaction. The second step includes the condensation reaction between Schiff base monemers with epichlorohydrine (EPC) to obtain epoxy resins. The structures of resulting compounds were confirmed by FT-IR, 1H- and 13C-NMR. TG-DTA and DSC measurements were made for thermal analysis of compounds.When looked for thermal stability data, it was seen that cured epoxy resins with aromatic amine possess higher thermal stability than that epoxy resins. According to TG analysis of resins and Schiff bases, it was found that resins were formed higher carbines residue than Schiff bases at 1000 ºC. Cured EP3 and EP6 resins demonstrated higher thermal stability according to other resins. The initial degradation temperatures and 66.43 %, 66.56 % weight loss of cured EP3 and EP6 resins were found to be 258 °C, 269 oC and 1000 ºC, respectively.Chemical resistance of the cured epoxy-amine systems in acidic, alkaline and organic solvents were determinated for coating applications. HCl, NaOH, DMSO, DMF, N-methyl prolidone, ethanol, THF and acetone were also used for corrosion tests. Chemical resistance data show that synthesized resins have good chemical resistance against various acidic, alkaline and common organic solvents.
