Abstract (EN)

Mythology is among the subjects that merit research and study, as it encompasses multiple dimensions shedding light on its intellectual and cultural roots. This study stems from a series of inquiries centered on the nature and origins of myths, the relationship between Arab and Western myths, and the historical precedence between the two. It also seeks to verify the existence of what is known as the "Tammuzian Movement." Additionally, the research explores how Badr Shakir al-Sayyab and Adonis employed myth and symbolism to express suppressed and prohibited themes amidst the oppression and injustice they experienced, utilizing love and war as dual modes of expression for such issues. The study focuses on two pivotal myths in modern Arabic literature: "Babylon," as utilized by al-Sayyab, and "The Phoenix," as employed by Adonis. It seeks to analyze how these two poets managed to use symbols and myths to reframe societal and political issues through a profound and artistically compelling lens. The significance of this study lies in its revelation of the role of myth as a symbolic tool reflecting themes of modernity and conflict, while also highlighting the cultural interplay between Arab and Western heritage. The scope of the study is confined to analyzing the myths of Babylon and the Phoenix as reflected in the literary works of al-Sayyab and Adonis, with a focus on the symbolic and historical contexts surrounding these texts. The research aims to achieve several objectives, most notably: defining myths and their origins, exploring the relationship between Arab and Western myths, and analyzing the use of myth as a medium to address issues of oppression and liberation. The study employs three principal methodologies—analytical, comparative, and inductive—to develop a comprehensive perspective on the role of myth in modern Arabic literature. The research concludes with a summary of the key findings derived from this investigation. While completing this research, I encountered some difficulties, the most important of which were: the scarcity of sources that spoke about the Phoenician myth, in addition to the difficulty of separating the important ideas and points that were between the Babylonian and Phoenician myths. As for the study methodology, I relied on three main approaches: analytical, comparative, and inductive, to reach a comprehensive vision that sheds light on the role of myth in modern Arabic literature. The study concluded with a conclusion that included the most prominent results reached by the research.
