Bacteriological and molecular characterization of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from patients with urinary tract infections in Thi-Qar

Abstract (EN)

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common bacterial infections and remain a worldwide health problem. UTI infections can occur anywhere in the urinary tract. Klebsiella is the second bacterium isolated from urine samples of patients with urinary tract infections after E. coli. Our study aimed to determine the prevalence of urinary tract infection caused by Klebsiella bacteria and to know the effect of antibiotics on Klebsiella bacteria in patients admitted to General Hospital and Renal Hospital. For the study, 200 urine samples were collected from patients in the General and Renal hospitals. The samples were cultured in media using sterile plastic containers. Then incubation was performed at 37°C for 24 hours. Bacteria growing on the media were identified and slides were prepared. The bacteria were then stained and tests such as microscopy tests, biochemical tests and antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed on the bacteria. The results showed that the prevalence of urinary tract infections caused by Klebsiella bacteria was higher in women than in men, and also that those aged 21-40 years (11.9%) had a higher incidence of UTI compared to other age groups.
