Abstract (EN)

The research focuses on the field of ballet, which is based on guidance at an early age. In this context, it aims to understand the impact of parents' physical, economic, cultural and social capital on the choice of ballet as an artistic profession. In terms of understanding and interpreting the research problem, the structure-agent interaction constituted the starting point of the research. In order to understand the impact of parents, a single case study from qualitative research methods was used. For this purpose, 31 ballet dancers who have worked and are currently working at the State Opera and Ballet Directorates were targeted as the participant group, and 31 ballet dancers were reached with the snowball technique. In-depth interviews were conducted with the participants through semi-structured open-ended questions. The main questions of the research were formulated as follows: 1) What is the effect of the structural characteristics of the field on parents' decisions to direct individuals to ballet as a profession? 2) What is the impact of physical, economic, cultural and social capital on parents' decisions? As a result of the research findings, it was determined that demographic characteristics and economic level play an important role. In this context, the cultural and social capital were also found to be functional. However, it was observed that the interaction matrix of the capital of parents differed according to socio-economic level. In the structure-agent relationality, it was found that the theme of "working conditions of the profession" was considered more prioritized for lower income groups suffering from economic difficulties, while themes such as individual talent, artistic aura and prestige of ballet were predominantly effective in middle-upper income groups.
