Abstract (EN)

Objective: This thesis aimed to evaluate the outcomes of bariatric surgery procedures performed between 2017 and 2024 at the Bariatric Surgery Center of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine. In particular, sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and mini gastric bypass (MGB) were compared in terms of morbidity, mortality, and long-term clinical outcomes. Methods: A total of 772 adult patients who underwent bariatric surgery were analyzed retrospectively. Demographic characteristics, comorbidities, type of surgical procedure, operative duration, postoperative complications, mortality, and follow-up data were collected. Appropriate statistical methods were applied for data analysis, with significance set at p<0.05. Results: The mean age of the study population was 39.8±10.7 years, and the majority were female (72.8%). The mean BMI was 44.5±5.6 kg/m². MGB was the most frequently performed procedure (73.4%), followed by SG (25.3%). Early postoperative complications included anastomotic leakage (1.4%) and bleeding (2.2%). In the late postoperative period, vitamin and mineral deficiencies (16.2%) and gallstone disease (9.2%) were the most common. While early complication rates were comparable between the two procedures, dumping syndrome occurred significantly more often in the MGB group (p=0.03). Conclusion: Bariatric surgery can be safely performed in our center with complication rates consistent with those reported in the literature. SG and MGB demonstrate similar safety profiles; however, MGB is associated with a higher incidence of dumping syndrome. Surgical decision-making should be guided by patient characteristics, comorbidities, and surgical expertise, while long-term success relies on multidisciplinary follow-up and continuous monitoring. Keywords: Bariatric surgery, sleeve gastrectomy, mini gastric bypass, complications, mortality
