The usage of rust in batik printing technique

Abstract (EN)

Besides textile and fashion design, the use of rust has become widespread in contemporary art, sculpture, ceramic, wood, paper and glass, architecture, surfaces. The rust itself consists of iron oxide. The important advantages in terms of sustainability are that rust is a completely natural formation, it is not harmful to the environment and human health, and that it does not require any energy during fabric dyeing. It is not true that rusty metals can contaminatetetanus, and it is not a source of tetanus alone, and if it does not come into contact with any microbial sources of tetanus, it does not cause tetanus. Within the scope of this research, the rust was obtained with different forms of iron (piece, powder, and solution) applied to the surface of the cotton fabric that was mordanted with alum, on which vinegar solution was sprayed. One group of the treated samples was covered with a nylon sheet to prevent acetic acid and moisture from escaping while another group was left open. In this way, a total of 60 batik printing samples were made by creating two different environmental conditions. According to the results of the experiments carried out in this study, which is intended to be a method for the designers who want to use rust in their work, it was determined that all forms of iron can be used in all types of batik printing to color the fabric, and that the colors obtained from the nylon covered sample group, in which acetic acid evaporation is prevented, were found to be darker tones in a shorter time.
