Abstract (EN)

As it is not clearly known when carpet weaving tradition has emerged, it has been one of the most important occupations of society in Anatolia from ancient times. Weaving, which is thought as an extention of nomadic culture, is perpetuated along with the nomadic society?s adopting a sedentary lifestyle. As a result of scientific studies on weaving, carpets from diverse regions with different raw materials, motifs, colour and compositional style are called according to their location of production. It is not certainly identified which effects were dominant for those carpets in gaining these kind of distinctive features. In West Anatolia, there are many well-known carpet centres, which acquired a unique identity by being well developed and able to keep this identity on their carpets. For this reason, by considering the region?s weaving potential, Bergama carpets are chosen to be the subject for this thesis.?Bergama carpet? is the main studying material for the thesis. Consequently, the visual and theoretical content of the thesis is completely shaped around ?Bergama carpet?. It is not exactly known if those carpets are woven actually in Bergama or in another carpet centre in West Anatolia. At this point, Bergama carpets are evaluated within a long period of time and a vast geographic area. During a research on carpets, carrying data of our traditional culture as documents for the next generation, it is very important to know about the raw material, colour and pattern features, which are the major distinctive elements of a carpet. Therefore, it should be the main purpose to do technical analysis and to determine the design features of the carpets correctly. This thesis with the title ?Design Features of Bergama Carpets and New Design Proposals? is handled with this point of view and Bergama carpets are evaluated from the aspect of their design.
