Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT Master Thesis EFFECT ON CARBONATİON OF COMPACTING FACTOR IN CONCRETE Tatar GÖNEN Firat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Conctruction Education 2003, Page: 54 The carbonation is defined as the reaction of calcium hiydroxide in the pore water of concrete with carbondioxside in atmosphere. Embedded steel in reinforced concrete members is protected from corrossion by alkaline composition of concrete which is provided mainly by the dissolution in the pore water of the calcium hiydroxide. Alkaline property of concrete is lost as a result of carbonation and steel rusts. This phenomenon is accepted as one of the main factors determining the service life of the reinforced concrete members. In this study the influance of compression factor on the rate of carbonation in concrete was investigated. Because the process of carbonation is actually a long-termm process, accelerated memot was choosen for tests. For mis reason, an air-tight cabin was developed for accelerated carbonation test. Concrates having different compact ratios was used and specimens were prepared as three series. Carbonation depths were measured with phenolphtalein which was prepared with %1 ethanol in different times. Furthermore specimens were exposured %10 carbondioxide in different humidity ratio (%35, 55, 80) in order to relate and support the compaction ratio and carbonation depth. Key Words: Carbonation, Concrete, Compacting factor VI
