Points of View of University Students About the Effects of the Developments in Information Technologies in the Music Industry

The progress in today?s information technologies has a considerable impact on thescientific world. However, some of this progress also affects the legal sales in the musicindustry. The effect of computer and internet technologies on the music industry is atopic of research that has not yet been thoroughly analyzed and therefore should bestudied.Along with the internet, the process of knowledge production and sharing,company structures, business conditions also undergo a renewal. In this study, thetechnological events that affect the music industry are analyzed; and alongside the easebrought by the internet technologies into marketing, sales and distribution for the musicindustry, the negative effects of these technologies are also put forth. The internettechnologies and its effects on the music industry are examined in terms of music firms,producers of listening devices and the listeners.Each advancement in the sphere of computers, internet, format of music product,listening devices directly influences factors such as the places to buy these products, theamounts, the variety, the production methods and amounts of these products, theindividuals within the industry and even the industrial model itself. Consequently, inthis study, the technological developments that influence the music industry, which isopen to change, are considered, and the problems within the industry due to this changeare investigated.The aim of this study is to explore the effects of the advancements in informationtechnologies on the music industry. To support the study, a questionnaire has beenapplied to university students in the cities of Izmir and Manisa, and the relationshipbetween technological advancements and purchase of music products are inquired.
