DEVELOPING OF COMPUTER AIDED PART RECOGNITION SYSTEMAND IMPLEMENTATION TO ENGINE ASSEMBLY(PhD Thesis )Adem Ç ÇEKGAZ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYOctober 2005ABSTRACTIn this study, it is aimed that the parts of an engine are recognised through faceneighbourhood relations and attributes and that recognised parts are assembledin a Computer Aided Design (CAD) environment. Expert system technique hasbeen utilized in recognition procedure. Firstly, STEP conversion of the parts ofan engine designed by user in a CAD environment are automatically performedand neighbouring faces and the face attributes belonging to each face arederived by evaluating of the STEP file generated. Part recognition procedureare carried out by using those attributes and the neighbouring faces. Aknowledge base is also generated using a text editor. Comparing the facerelations and the attributes in the knowledge base and part recognitionprocedure, part name and the rule number are determined from the knowledgebase. Drawing is saved into the database with the name of the part and arerepresented in the Face Oriented Neighbourhood Relation Matrix. In theassembly stage, reference surfaces belonging to saved parts are determined andthey are assembled by moving into the assembly file through reference surfacesin a CAD environment.Scientific Code : 708Key Words : Part recognition, STEP, Engine assemblyPage Number : 233Adviser : Prof. Dr. Mahmut GÜLES N
