COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN AND THE RELIABILITY ANALYSIS OF GEAR TRAINS ELEMENTS (Ph. D. Thesis) Kerim ÇETİNKAYA THE UNIVERSITY OF GAZİ THE INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY February 1 995 ABSTRACT In this study, gear trains elements design, of the nonspeed change type that may be sing le or couple or three or four steps is made by computer. In the first section of the program, prepared in GWBASIC language, the optimization of gear design i s made on the basis of minimum overall centre distance and the results of the gear design is studied to optimize once more by the method of the reliability design. A direct search method is used in the optimum design procedure. In the second section of the program, the shaft design and the selection of ball bearing are made. In this program, the reliability of the designed shaft is estimated, in adition to the design of the shaft is made by selection of the reliability value the same as safety factor. Furthermore, the temperature of the gear trains is estimated too. The results of the computer aided design of gear trains elements which is given as example were compa red with the results in the literature and they were found out similar each other. It is conclu ded that various optimum design can be made for a design at every power and reduction ratio by computer program.
