ABSTRACT Status of Current Learning Strategies and Utility of Visual Images Strategy in Piano Education Based on Information Processing Theory M. Kayhan KURTULDU Güzel Sanatlar Eğitimi Anabilim Dalı Müzik Öğretmenliği Bilim Dalı Prof. Nevhiz ERCAN Mayıs ? 2007 The aim of this study is to determinate the using level of some learning and working strategies using in piano education and to specify the effect of visual images strategy that it has crated it in piano education and learning process. In the direction of the aims pointed out in foregoing paragraph descriptive and experimental working method has followed. In descriptive part of the study, first literature survey have been accomplished by the aim of determinate the learning strategies related to subject. In literature survey framework and specifies of information processing theory have been investigated and relations with piano education has been deduced. Components those will avaluated by searching the references related wiht this subject and strategies which will use in this process was determinated. Before experimental study a guestionary was prepared including components and strategies on this subject, with a view to reach some preinformations. The questionary was applied with a sampling group, consist of piano educators and third class piano stıdents in some universities. The questionary is comprising the questions, that are including some working strategies based on information processing theory, working activities and some informations that will provide obtaining the pre-informations in experimental study. At the end of the ix questionary study, using of basic learning strategies and results for experimental study was collected from sampling group. After applications and obtained results in descriptive section of research, experimental study was started. In experimental study, visual images strategy that is one of the less prefering strategies according to the results of questionary was took on. Strategy was experimented on the test and control groups consist of third class piano students. Groups have limited with 5 persons per groups, on totaly 10 persons. In tfis study equivalence test have been made to determinate the balance of groups about piano playing skills and knowledge. Subsequent to positive results, first studied with control group to inhibit the coaction between groups and sample song was studied with classic style by using any strategy. Afterwords the saple song has studied with test group and determinated strategy visual images strategy have applied to test group. Before application, visual images strategy have explaned for better understanding and performing by students. After equivalence and first test studies, a repeated measuring for each groups was applied to understand the effect of strategy about recalling and storing in mind. During experimental study performance of students forming the groups, was recorded with video camera. Assessments of equalence, first and last tests that are performed with test and control groups, was made with this video display by the observers. One each different measures developed to achieve the datas of research about equalence and last tests. While those measures used by the observers was developing, expert opinions was collected about sample songs. Expert opinions was collected from piano educators by an interview that made with ?formed interview form?. Besides an observation form was created to control the researcher who applicated the experimental study. With this form activity of researcher in aducation action was controled.
