Abstract (EN)

Along with the family being the smallest institution in society, it is also the foundation of large institutions with the continuity of the generation. As a form of social organization, the continuity of the family is of great importance in organizing the states. For this reason, the dominant ideologies of the time are as influential as the cultural codes that the family has in its form and content. The changing economic conditions make the family away from its basic functions and make it an institution that ensures the continuity of the system. The change in the family transforms it into a tool of capitalist ideology through the function of reproduction, production and consumption. Hollywood science fiction film produces its ideology in its own style of expression while it reflects reality and the world again. Science fiction cinema, where technology and science are brought together with fantastic stories, is a kind of ideology that is built on simple and ordinary things. Science fiction films manipulate scientific facts and make sense of them in cultural patterns. Since narration reliance on cultural structure as much as heroism, events of everyday life like family and child, reveals the question of family and ideology relation. The main purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between ideology and family in science fiction cinema. In line with this goal, Hollywood science fiction cinema, The films E.T., Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Artificial Intelligence (AI) (2001), War of the Words (2005), Interstellar (2014) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017) were selected on the basis of purposeful sample to be analyzed in the context of family and ideology. The determined films are solved using serial and sequential methods from the stages of semiotics science. Keywords: Family, Ideology, Hollywood, Cinema, Science Fiction
